Is Rafe still rising in popularity? How many Ralphs are pronounced Rafe?

How popular if Rafe at moment? It is a family name so I plan to use it but I'm not sure if it will be a first or middle name. Rafe seems to have increased in popularity recently. I actually bumped into a little Rafe a few days ago after very rarely hearing it so I assume it is somewhat popular. Has the name peaked in or still rising? How does it compare to names like Hector, Magnus and Edmund in terms of popularity? Do you think it is likely to end up a top 100 name?

Crucially there appear to be multiple spellings so there may be more about than the simple statistics for the name Rafe suggest. How many little Ralphs are actually 'rayf' or are most people using the Ralf pronunciation?

Dark greener is a great place to check England and Wales popularity, assuming that's where you are. Rafe has risen, but still not common at #247 and looks to have flattened. I haven't met any Rafe's or Ralph's and have a 2.5 year old, but I think most people now use the American "ralf" based on threads you see on here.

Ralph #94
Rafe #247
Hector #308
Magnus #358
Edmund #857

Ralph pronounced Rafe, are we setting ourselves up for a lifetime of correcting pronunciation? | Mumsnet
Why the change of username, @LimeslemonsPomegranates ?

I'm not the poster of the other thread but that sort of answers my question that the name is at least becoming more visible and used!

I used it for my son 14 years ago and while I’ve heard of a couple of other Rafes since then, it’s not a name that comes up much. Haven’t met another one yet.

People seem to like it a lot as a name, but often pronounce it Raff-ay (like cafe) on first sighting.

I have a Ralph pronounced Rafe in my Year 2 class...been teaching 20 years and have a child in Year 4 and never heard anyone called it before.

List of boys names. Looking for a slightly unusual historic classic | Mumsnet

Rafe looks too similar to Rape for me, and I would use the Ralph spelling. Some people name their child Louis and say it as 'Loo-is', or Mia and say it as 'My-a', or Lucia or Alicia. If you are prepared to correct people, I don't see it as a problem. It will get said as Ralf a lot, I expect.

Not one single person, adult or child has made a rape “joke” about my Rafe in 14 years. I see people voice that as a concern here but it has never been a real-life problem in my experience.

Good because it's not something to joke about but they might be thinking it.

People have a lot of passing thoughts though and it seems a bit OTT to base a name choice on what a few people might think but not actually voice.

I think people’s main concern about names is that their child might get teased by other kids because of their name, and I’m just sharing my experience that this hasn’t been an issue for my kid for this name.

That's how I'd initially pronounce it, Rafe like café, then Rafe like safe. Not sure it would occur to me to say it like Ralph at all tbh.

Runsaway · Yesterday 20:42

I only know Ralph pronounced as Rafe. That’s how I would automatically pronounce it.

narcASD · Yesterday 21:23

I will always associate Ralph with the penis in then teen book, forever young.

Rafe just sounds too close to rape, I've not heard either of those names IRL, only a "Ralphie" which is equally as dreadful.
