What happened to normal conventional names?

An acquaintance who is due slightly after me has just announced on Facebook that she will be naming her baby girl Charm. I originally thought it was short for something else but no. It's just the word Charm. I'm not saying that everyone should name their baby something incredibly dull, but why have full-blown dog names become so common for human beings? Has naming babies just become a creativity contest? I see a lot of conventional names being asked about and considered on MN, but I'm seeing the opposite with people that I know offline. DH and I were discussing this last night.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I’d assume they were Nigerian or Filipino with the name Charm.

Bless that poor child. I'm not sure why every name must be so cutesy and infantile now. This is as bad as that 'influencer' couple that named their son Koazy because he was cosy in the womb. 🙄

Their youngest is also Kove!

What did you think Charm might be short for, Charmander?

Charmaine, Charmian.

heartsinvisiblefury · 17/06/2026 21:42

Do the parents like it? Yes. That is ALL that matters.

Do they have to worry or bother themselves about whether someone may not like it? NO.

Wasn't there a post here about someone who called their child Slithery, naned after their birth? I think it was an influencer not a MNer, but still....

What classes as a traditional name? Not many Barbara and Sharon's around any more. Or should we go a bit further back to Boudica and Æthelflæd? Times move on and things change.

Phineyj · 17/06/2026 21:56

Maybe she is a physicist.

hotchocinsummer · 17/06/2026 22:00

I think it’s quite nice!
im sure hope was unusual at one time, common as anything now! Same with faith, destiny etc etc
why judge?

Thought Barbara/Margaret/Betty etc were coming around again?

climbintheback · 17/06/2026 22:43

What happened to Ethelred and Boudicca?

Giraffehaver · 17/06/2026 23:15

I went to school with a Doris. I bet she wished she'd have been called Charm

movingstressfully · 17/06/2026 23:22

I did know a Charmaine that went by Charm.

It leaves plenty of scope for matching siblings, Up, Down and Strange.

Don't forget Bottom and Top!

Denim4ever · 17/06/2026 23:32

There seem to be a lot of Alberts and Enids round here. Perhaps more unusual names are a backlash against toddlers with great grandparent type names

HoppityBun · 17/06/2026 23:35

Charmaine, Charmian

TheGriffle · 17/06/2026 23:36

My Nan is a Charm (pronounced Sharm) short for Charmaine. Have you heard them say it or just written down? If it’s pronounced Charm as in lucky charm then I’m not much of a fan.

Crispynoodle · 17/06/2026 23:38

Charm is a lovely name let’s hope she’s charming! I’m a teacher and in my 20 plus years at this job I’ve never met a Grace that was graceful not once!

MrsPapillon · 17/06/2026 23:43

Charm isn’t too bad, in the grand scheme. Far better than some of the ridiculous names that parents are saddling their children with in their pursuit to give them a unique name. I’m sure some of them just stick a pin in the dictionary and choose a random word.

Sally2791 · 17/06/2026 23:44

Or siblings Quark and Strangeness

iseenyouwithkefir · 17/06/2026 23:44

I think Charm is a virtue or quality name, like Mercy, Faith, Merit, Honor, etc., although not one of the more popular ones in the UK. Could also be short for Charisma, I guess - as in Carpenter.

Cuzy · 18/06/2026 02:50

I agree. I would argue that there’s not enough judgement and pressure within society. Social norms usually prevent people from doing things that are unwise. You see this in America where parents regularly name their children after weapons because of the lack of judgement from others there. There was even a couple in the UK who named their child after AH. Charm is just on the less extreme end of the spectrum.

Adam Thomas and Claudia Patatas

'Neo-nazi' couple named baby after Hitler

A couple accused of being in National Action gave their child the middle name Adolf, a court hears.

I’m more interested that she went on FB to announce the name of her unborn baby. I guess she’s excited.

SquirrelGG · 18/06/2026 04:49

My late DM, who would be in her nineties now, had a friend of a similar age named Jewel. I really don't see what is so odd about Charm.

AImportantMermaid · 18/06/2026 04:56

Tablesandchairs23 · 17/06/2026 20:47

Up to her what she calls her baby. Charm sounds like a stripper name!

Charm Inultra. It sounds like toilet paper.

RumbleHoney · 18/06/2026 05:09

my username was inspired by two Mormon model/influencer types 😄
