.......are the names of 80yr old identical triplets who were featured on ITV last night.

I thought these ladies were lovely, both physically and as people---so full of life and fun.

Loved their names too. All similar in sound but because they didn't all begin with the same letter, the names gave individuality.

More for the 'old names' thread!

I had a great aunt Gladys who was wonderful

edam · 24/06/2008 10:06

Alice isn't an old name, plenty of under-80 year olds called that.

My godmother's sister was called Alice, though - died last year at the age of 86.

I love the name Doris, might run that past hubby tonight. had an Aunty Doris who was bonkers, sadly missed.

hadn't realised the names sound similar, as they don't look the same. very observant!

terrier141 · 24/06/2008 12:09

We call my 8 year old dd Doris as a nickname and her best friend we call Gladys - they seem to have stuck - and they love it!

kiwibella · 24/06/2008 12:09

Alice was a contender for my dd... after my grandmother who I had known as Alice all my life. Then, I found out that she was actually called Alison!!!

I wanted to see that show last night but missed it It looked interesting by the ads.

i can see Glenys coming back. But Doris and Gladys might not come back for a while.

Alice is not old. Alice is 'out there'.

Wow, my name is "out there"! I hated it as a child, as it is very uncommon in girls my age, but love how popular it has become.

i spent years being called a Doris.

i can see a resurgence as the next Alice though. (gazillions of them round here)

nooooot sure about glad though...

Alishanty · 24/06/2008 17:21

Another Alice here too who didn't like my name as a child as it was uncommon. Really like the fact it is quite popular now.

LadyThompson · 30/06/2008 11:36

Doris is actually quite a pretty name and Doris Lessing has just won the Nobel Prize for Literature. A feisty lady! But can't love Gladys. Makes me think of Ruth Madoc.

Comerscroft · 30/06/2008 12:33

We have a young lady of 20ish in our church called Gladys!

Love Gladys! There was an old lady who lived across the road from my Gran called Glad. She was great and had a yorkshire terrier she used to carry around with her.

Alice is a 'timeless' name I reckon and not old fashioned at all.

I also had a Great Auntie Doris who was a chain smoker from Newcastle. Is a sweet name though

snowleopard · 30/06/2008 12:39

When I was very small we had a very dim cat called Gladys - for that reason I can't think of it as a baby name. Doris is due for a revival though - could shorten to Dot too - lovely.

fruitstick · 30/06/2008 14:46

These are the top 30 names from 1924 with Doris in at a respectable number 7 and Gladys in at 14. The 1904 list is virtually identical to 2007! I may personally campaign for a resurgence of Doreen, Irene and Vera!

My Nana was Doris Edith. Couldn't get either past DH as a name for DD though, even as a middle name. Actually I think Doris and Gladys are nice words but still associated with old ladies - maybe they won't be eventually.
My Nana had sisters called: Madge, Ada, Lily, Glad and Vi and a brother called Fred. Fab.

fruitstick · 30/06/2008 14:57

My little boy is called Fred (not Freddie, oh no) and it's a great name. Next time I'm going for Elsie or Ernest.
