Lovely name, not rare in Ireland for the 30+ age group, less babies being named Aisling though.

It’s Ash-ling or Ash-lin or Ashleen depending on where in Ireland you are.

I think the issue is that words with that letter formation usually have a silent S - like ‘Isle’ or ‘Aisle’

Outside of Ireland you might find that people get the pronunciation wrong.

Nah. Everyone in England copes just fine with Niamh which also uses Gaelic phonemes.

There was an Aisling in my school (in England) in the year above me. She was really popular, a fantastic gymnast, had beautiful hair and a sister named Siobhan. So that's what the name makes me think of. 😀

I was surprised to hear the name is dated now because I've never met another Aisling (but obviously I'm not in Ireland) and it's interesting to hear it was so popular in the 80s, which is bang on for when I knew her.

Not everyone. I have heard English people make some really bad attempts at pronouncing Niamh and Aoife (they literally just sounded out Ay-oh-iffy).

I know two Aislings.

One is pronounced Ash-ling and the other Ash-leen.

I think it’s a beautiful name. Lol at the poster who thought it meant sickly and frail though 😂

Great Irish name, I have a roisin

Firebird83 · 16/06/2026 21:26

The one I know pronounces it ash-leen, which is lovely.
