Frances? Does it matter if we pronounce it differently?

Currently expecting baby #2 and struggling to find a girls name we both agree on.

Frances is top of our list but my husband is northern and pronounces it clipped: 'Fran-sis'. I'm from the south and pronounce it 'Frarn-ses'. I'm happy to adjust my pronunciation but my family will also likely say it the southern way and my husband is concerned our baby will dislike it/get confused.

Anyone with a similar name/various regional pronunciations able to comment on whether they find it irritating?

Gosh that’s really rather rude. What’s wrong with you?

It was you correcting me about the pronunciation of Lewes. There was no need.
Lewes [ˈluːɪs], Lewis [ˈluːɪs].

Well obviously other posters and HQ thought your response was rude and unnecessary.

If you say brighten as bright-ehn then I am glad to not hear it.

Where do you live now? Local pronunciation is probably what will stick with school friends etc.

Both pronunciations are good. Her parents will say lots if words differently and she won't mind.

How does it currently go at "bath" time? Or if you want to feed the "ducks" in the park? Are you able to communicate? Obviously the best thing to happen would be the northerner learns to speak properly.

I'd say the southerner needs to learn how to speak properly!
But seriously it won't matter at all. It certainly won't confuse her. My husband and I have different accents it hasn't affected my children at all. My daughter is married to someone from a different country. Children just get used to their parents having different accents and pronouncing their names differently..
Ultimately a child's accent and how they decide to pronounce their name will be influence more by where they live than by their parents anyway

I love regional accents! It would be boring if we all sounded the same.

It’s not my (or my husband’s) accent and we don’t say his name this way - but Francis pronounced in RP as many of our friends say it with this vowel: /ɑː/ makes it sound extremely elegant.

My children pronounced their own names two different ways depending on who they were talking to (in our case which language they were speaking) from as soon as they could talk. They weren't even aware of it consciously in the early years I don't think (my assumption as as they weren't initially consciously able to say which language they'd been speaking if asked, but switched unconsciously and completely, without mixing). Later they were aware but regarded it as normal that their names changed with the language just like all words.

I'd think it'd be the same with accents as long as nobody insists on them using the "wrong" accent pronunciation out of context (so if you have a southern accent like your parents do not pronounce the name in a northern accent but everything else your usual way as that's what will throw them when they unconsciously spot the difference with your parents/ people generally when you visit your parents) each use your own pronunciation in keeping with your own accent!
