Is there any fmdifference in pronounciation between Elowen and Elowyn?

I'd say Elowhen and Elowin respectively. But maybe as I grew up in Wales 🤷🏼‍♀️

The -wyn ending is masculine. I'd pick a different name because you'll get the wrong pronunciation. (EL-o-wen when it's el-OW-en).

El- names are so popular and she'll be another Ellie.

Is the first a girls name and the second a boys name?

NamingNoNames · 04/06/2026 20:46

@LizandDerekGoals , no. The Elowyn (mis)spelling seems to be more popular. A bit like Louie and Louis.

Elowyn makes me mentally autocorrect to 'Elwyn' .
Elwyn isn't Cornish or Welsh but there are many 70+ year old men called it in Wales.

I was about to say the same about -wyn being a male ending. I know it feels counter-intuitive if you're not Welsh, and I know an English woman who called her daughter the -wyn version of a name, but I've seen enough Welsh people commenting about it online to be wary. I do quite like Elowen and also Eleri, but someone made a valid point about considering whether you'd mind if people called her Ellie. It can be frustrating not being allowed to be called what all your friends naturally call you because your parents don't like it.
