Do you think Cedric will become more popular?

I've just seen a video stating that this name is expected to rise in popularity for baby boys soon. The woman who said it was American, so maybe this applies to the states more than here. I can't say that I've ever met a Cedric in my life and am curious what would be causing the rise in popularity. It seems a bit random. Thoughts?

I think it's more common in France, so its best chance of becoming popular is if an influential French footballer joins one of the UK teams and impresses people... like when there was a spate of little Thierrys who are now about 27.

It was very popular in France in the 80s, but was a bit of a chavy name there, similar to 2010s Jayden. Bizarrely (for me) Jessica was also a 80s French chav name. They're known as Kevin names on the continent.

I think Nigel and Timothy are pretty soggy too. I thought Cedric was the anglicised version of the Welsh name Cedrych.

Yes, I think Nigel and Timothy are a bit soggy too.

Cedric does have a soggy feel but in reality it is quite a strong-sounding name. I love the Welsh version.

I've seen another Welsh name, Ceretic, cited as possible inspiration for it, but it's all speculation. I'm fascinated by invented names, and why authors choose to create a name instead of using an appropriate existing one. You never really know where they plucked their inventions from.

You don't know why authors invent names?! Maybe there isn't an appropriate one for the tale they want to tell. If only you could ask Shakespeare, Dickens, Tolkien, George RR Martin...

All names were 'made up' at some point.

Why does anyone invent anything?

I guess perhaps Cedric is just the next old man name after Albert, Arthur and Alfie, George etc. But Cedric will always be Cedric Sneers to me.

I’ll always think of Cedric Diggory. Somehow I don’t think Dudley will be a name doing well any time soon.

We had a Coal man back in the 70s who was known to all as Cedric the coal. The only one I’ve ever known

highlandpip · 05/06/2026 17:58

I’ve knwi 3 Cedric’s, all large breed dogs !

MegMortimer · 05/06/2026 18:00

It was the name of Little Lord Fauntleroy.

SkippitySkoppity · 05/06/2026 18:45

It's not as bad as Cecil or Cyril. That's the best I can say.

I doubt it will become mainstream popular. I can imagine people who like to nerd out on Anglo Saxon history choosing it for their son. (edited to add: I've just learnt from this thread that it's not in fact Anglo Saxon. So maybe the Anglo Saxon boffins would in fact despise this masquerading name)

MadKittenWoman · 05/06/2026 18:57

No.

HugoThatway · 05/06/2026 18:58

I quite like Cyril.

If you're an anglo-saxon nerd, you'd also know it should be pronounced Kedrik, which is a much cooler sounding name ;p

I knew a Cedric as a teen. He was really good looking and asked me out. I flatly refused purely because he was called Cedric.

Well that's actually ridiculous!
