Thoughts on Iris Aurelia or Aurelia Iris for a baby name

What are your thoughts on the name Iris Aurelia

is Iris too common? There’s also litttle room to have a nickname ? If it’s Aurelia Iris they can be Rae for short but Iris Aurelia is harder to shorten

which do you prefer?

thankyou

Aurelia Iris is a bit of a mouthful and it doesn’t flow well - usually having two vowels together sounds clunky. If you like Aurelia and flower names Rose, Lily, Violet, Daisy, Poppy, or Jasmine would work better.

Aurelia Rose is beautiful! I would go for this.

Iris Aurelia is very nice. Love Iris.

champagnetrial · 30/05/2026 09:45

It kind of sounds like an amalgamation of bodyparts tbh. Areola Iris.

Goodmorningeveryone26 · 30/05/2026 09:57

Iris Aurelia flows much better. Not good to have a name ending ina vowel followed by name starting with vowel so for me Aurelia Iris is out. It’s a bit stuttery

Mumsntfan1 · 30/05/2026 10:39

My friend's little girl is Aurelia. Lia for short.

I came on to say something similar ! body part sound to me too but i really like Iris.

NamingNoNames · 30/05/2026 11:26

Iris is nice. I don't like Aurelia (too frilly and vowelly) and Rae is only OK as a surname.
Aurelia Iris doesn't flow.
I too thought 'areola'.

Iris doesn't need a 'nickname'. Let one happen if you want to but don't force it.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/05/2026 11:42

I love Iris. It's short enough, it doesn't need a nickname.

Aurelia is way too fussy for me. Not to my taste all.

Iris Aurelia
Iris doesn’t need to be shortened

You've started a few threads, @CheeryMintHiker . When's the baby due?

Sibling name ideas for Olympia: Isadora, Iris or Adaline? | Mumsnet
OP's also been considering Aurelia and middle name Bloom.

Iris is the nicest IMO and Adaline the least nice.
Bloom is best forgotten.

Iris is the better first name.

Smart, short and a beautiful flower.
Aurelia is better as a second name.

Iris Aurelia sounds great.

Iris is one of the few flower names that doesn't sound difficult when said aloud with Aurelia.

EnidVance · 30/05/2026 13:35

I don’t like Iris at all. It’s ugly, to me. It is popular.

Aurelia is lovely.

rhabarbarmarmelade · 30/05/2026 13:55

Aurelia Iris without a doubt. Flows much better.

Calliopespa · 31/05/2026 17:56

I like Aurelia and don't mind Iris but I don't like them together - too many r and vowel combinations.

Also, like Aurora, Aurelia is vaguely reminiscent of areola - not so much I wouldn't use it, but together with another anatomical word for a part of the eye, it just has an odd atmosphere of bodily connotations as a name.

I think Aurelia goes nicely with short plainer names, like Jane or Kate.

I don't think it flows and it will sound like Aur-ail-yer-iris.

BigElderflower · 31/05/2026 18:57

I mean, it doesn't really matter, does it? Do you know the middle names of any of your friends or colleagues?

I don't even know the middle names of most of my family members.

As a first name, I think either is lovely. But apparently Iris is becoming more popular, if that is a concern of yours.

The opposite sounds worse
I-rissole-rai-ya

NamingNoNames · 31/05/2026 19:16

@BigElderflower , not unless the first and last name are very common or duplicated. I can only think of one colleague's middle name and that's because when full names were needed for flights someone remarked about it being posh.

Neither flows well imo.

It's not a good combination, although both individual names are fine on their own.

ClassicalQueen · 31/05/2026 19:34

One or the other, both sounds like you’re trying too hard.

This op.

Tbh this is a bit of a theme with all the various name threads you have posted.

So far, I think Aurelia is nicest. It is classic (and classical), pretty, not overly frilly or contrived and not over-used.

I'd stick with that and work for a MN that is simple and sits well with it. Often with a distinctive first name, I find it is better to choose a calmer second name. I can see Iris was along those lines - it is short, not unusual or out there - but it just had the unfortunate bodily part connotations plus the vowels and r sounds clashed.

I'd go with Aurelia and keep looking for a sweet and simple mn you like. It doesn't have to be a showstopper. Names are a bit like outfits: a fancy dress calls for plainer jewellery; a fancy necklace needs a plainer dress. Aurelia has all the prettiness, distinctiveness and flair you need. Two names like Aurelia Olympia, for example, fight and do no favours to each other.

Calliopespa · 31/05/2026 20:02

I don't know if you like Alice op, but if you like the sound of Aurelia Iris, Aurelia Alice sounds similar but doesn't have that awkward repetition of the r sound.

I think Aurelia Alice works ok, and sounds nice.

Cocktailsandcheese · 31/05/2026 20:13

Yes it sounds nice. I don't see why she needs a nickname.

Excellentsausages · 01/06/2026 12:26

I don't think the two names flow well together.

Aurelia is lovely (i guess from wanting Rae as a shortening you are using Au-ray-lee-uh rather than Au-ree-lee-uh? Both are nice.)
I'm not a huge fan of Iris.

Aurelia Jasmine, Aurelia Lucy, Aurelia Sophie - lots of names would work, I'd keep the middle name short and sweet and starting with a consonant.
