I love this name but am so confused on how to spell it. Is it Macy? Maci? Mayci? Maycie? Maycee? Maycey? Macey? Macie? Everyone seems to have a different preference. Macy is the most common spelling I would assume, but it's not my favourite.

Yes and the (oh so famous) American department store is "Macy's" not "Macy"
😁😁😁

The famous British retailer is Marks and Spencer not Mark's and Spencer's.
You are not funny.

PhaseFour · 28/05/2026 21:35

I really don't like the name. And the fact that it can be spelt so many ways is a definite negative. It's frustrating for staff and especially so for the students.

I work in a high school and in our school we have multiples of each of rhe following spellings:

Macie
Macey
Macy.

Then to add to the confusion:

Maci-Lea
Macey-Lee
Maisie-May.

For those who suggest the MAISIE spelling - it's not straightforward. We have one who pronounces Macie as May-zee (another name entirely) and others who pronounce it Mace-ee.

This is what your daughter will be up against!

Ok...ok....chill 😁
I was mostly being a bit silly.
My point is the majority of British people will have never heard of a department store that exists only in another country and really wouldn't make any link between that retailer and a child named Macy.

Needmorelego · 28/05/2026 21:40

@Tzzy this thread has gone a bit odd (American department store chat) and I am part of that so I apologise for the derailment.
The spelling thing isn't the huge issue that some are thinking.
Even "classic" names can have different spellings (Catherine, Katherine, Kathryn Katharine etc) and there will always be times that people make a mistake and spell it wrong but 99% of the time once told the correct spelling they will then get it right.
🙂

Marcie is a nicer name I think. Beautiful song by Joni Mitchell.

DamsonBramble · 28/05/2026 21:48

One of the Bates grandchildren is a Maci, so it must still be used in the US, despite the store. (If anyone watched Bringing up Bates in lockdown!)

Hesma · 28/05/2026 21:54

Usually Macey from the schools I’ve worked in

PrincessHoneysuckle · 28/05/2026 22:02

Macy/Maisie is the the most popular name in the secondary I work in joint with Lily and Mia

ttcfirsttime26 · 28/05/2026 22:03

I’d spell it Macy or Macey

OtterandaRock · 28/05/2026 22:11

Yes, it does mean Macy's. We visited while on holidays once and as a child it impressed me.

It is not quite like calling a child Debenham or Littlewood, but not far off calling them Fortnum.

Macy sounds like a cowboy name to me. Macy, Tracy, Crawford, Codey, and Jed rode out in a posse.

My point is the majority of British people will have never heard of a department store... Because the majority of British people don't watch films or think of travelling to USA.

Seriously......that American department store is not as important to the average Brit as you think it is 😂😂

Maci-Lea is perfect. Go for it.
Maci-Lea?

If that's aimed at me then upthread I did at least apologise to the OP for the derailment.
Anyway.... I wish you and your obsession with American department stores goodnight 🙂

I've taught two over the years, spelt Macie and Macey. Just to warn you, the name does get confused with Maisie, a lot.

Personally, I really dislike the spellings ending in i, or with a y in the middle. They just look wrong.

The stats from darker green seem to suggest that Macie is currently the most popular way to spell it in England and Wales (2024 stats), so I would go with that.

Macie - 638th
Macey - 1065th
Macy - 1302nd

There's no record of Maci or Maycie so I definitely wouldn't use those.

My dog is called Maci and the vets always pronounce it Mack-ee

KojaksLollipop · 31/05/2026 00:50

I know a Macy in her 20’s, she really suits it and although it’s not one I’d pick, it is pretty inoffensive. All 5 siblings have musician themed names, father owns a musical instrument shop, and is pretty cool, lol
