Thoughts on Edith?

My dad and my MIL hate it and MIL says she would refuse to call our baby anything other than Edie. We wanted the nickname Edie anyway but is it really that bad!? My husband and I both like it a lot.

Our last name begins with W but having heard from other EW’s we understand it’s rare to actually get picked on for having those initials.

Virginia will almost certainly be the middle name no matter what first name we go with.

The other name we’re considering is Abigail and we’d probably exclusively call her Abby.

Lovely. My DS has an Edith and an Edie in his class.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 26/05/2026 13:52

I love Edith, and Edie. But (unlike most MNers) I don't see the point in naming your child Edith if you're going to call her Edie all the time.
I also love Abigail.

I have nieces called Abigail and Edie though so am biased.

Spidey66 · 26/05/2026 13:56

I like Edith and especially Edie!

EnidVance · 26/05/2026 14:17

I don’t like it personally, there’s something prim and proper about it. I love Edie though.

Edith is fairly popular though, it’s just part of the current trend of vintage names,I see less Abigails (I work with kids), and prefer it to Edith.

Cocktailsandcheese · 26/05/2026 16:13

I like Edie but hate Edith
Abigail/Abby is nice

StopFeckingSnoring · 26/05/2026 16:18

I love Edith and Edie. So so much prettier and cooler than Daphne, Olive and Ivy.

ThemUnsYouseUns · 26/05/2026 18:23

I really don’t like Edith but that’s because I can’t bear the current baby-name trend for old people names (no disrespect to old people, of course!)

But I agree with other posters that it’s best to keep names to yourself for the time being, and absolutely call your daughter what you want!

Daffodilsinthespring · 26/05/2026 18:27

Abigail is really dated. Edith is lovely.

I think so too. Daphne is heavy and just awful, Olive isn't really pretty - either the sound or the fruit and Ivy is ok.

But Edith/Edie has class!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 26/05/2026 19:17

I think Edith is lovely. Old English too.

Comedycook · 26/05/2026 19:35

Personally I find it frumpy but it's your baby so you choose the name. Grandparents had their chance to name their own children and it's outrageous of them to suggest they won't use it

ChocolateCinderToffee · 26/05/2026 19:17

I think Edith is lovely. Old English too.

yep Edward the Confessor's wife. And the wife of Harold Godwin. And his mistress (Edith Swan-neck as there were so many Ediths)

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/05/2026 20:17

If you want to call her Edie, then call her Edie! Don’t saddle her with Edith - terrible name, sorry - if you are going to call her something else!

clary · 26/05/2026 20:58

doh - Harold Godwinson I mean. He was the son of Godwin. Obviously.

Glitterbiscuits · 26/05/2026 21:00

It’s lovey. Classy

LivingTheDreamish · 26/05/2026 21:57

I'd be calling her Edith just on principal now. It wouldn't have been on trend when your dad/MIL were naming their children but they really should keep their beaks out. Edith nn Edie is really lovely. No issues with EW unless your surname is Wharton.

I do also like Abigail but not Abby so much.

Giraffehaver · 26/05/2026 22:04

Edith Virginia oozes class and charm. Just lovely

mamaduckbone · 26/05/2026 22:08

I love love love it. We wanted it for ds2 if he had been a girl. My dmum hated it as she associated it with an aged aunt but we would have gone with it anyway. Please have a little Edith for me…I ended up with 2 massive rugby playing boys so never got to use it!

RegalDiamondMonster · 26/05/2026 22:16

It's just a personal thing but i don't like 'th' names much, like Seth, Beth, Meredith, Elspeth, Martha. Edith and Judith are probably two of the better ones. Weirdly I don't mind Bethan or Dorothea.

Anyway that's just a matter of taste, Edith is fine, normal, similar vibe to Florence, Martha etc. Abigail is more dated probably due to large numbers in 90s.

HugoThatway · 26/05/2026 22:41

@RegalDiamondMonster , I feel the same only I quite like Martha, Dorothy and Elizabeth but dislike Seth, Beth, Bethan, Meredith, Lilith, Dorothea, Athena, Thea and Theo.

I think it might depend on where in the name the TH is, and what the other letters are. The TH in Dorothy and Dorothea seem different to me.

Greenknightsuccess · 26/05/2026 22:54

Both my grandmothers were named Edith, but neither of them chose to go by that name, coincidentally.
I used to think that was because it was a hideous name, but it’s growing on me now, surprisingly.

MeltyMomenrs · 26/05/2026 23:08

Im 57 and had a great Aunt Edith, who was in her 80's when I was born.. Lovely lovely woman, I've never met another one since!

I don't have much to do with babies & very young children these days, but I haven't heard it being used or on name threads here .though reading the thread seems like I'm
an outlier!

i can well see a cute baby/toddler making it 'cute' & it also being a good name as a child/teen/adult.

there are names j just can't imagine giving a child, I think it's largely depending on your generation, which names seem like a good revival & which definitely don't!.

if my Mum/MIL had had an issue with a name I'd have given that consideration IF it was a personal bad association, but if it's just a general 'don't like it' it would have been 'tough'.

definitely go for the 'long' version of whatever you choose, it gives her choices.

Abigail is ok, but I think it's both dated & over used! (Sorry anyone with young Abigail's)

massivestress · 26/05/2026 23:41

Makes me think of Grey Gardens

Xmasallergies · 27/05/2026 15:47

It is fine, it’s not the prettiest name but it does sound strong. Edie is similar to Evie which is super popular so maybe your mum is just out of touch with the name fashion.

Peonies12 · 27/05/2026 15:54

Why on earth are you discussing names with any one else!! Mad!!
If you'll use Edie, just name that. Don't get giving longer names that are never used.
