Can anyone help find a girls name we both love?

DH and I are struggling to agree on a girls name. I like Heather, Hazel, Mary, Miriam and Victoria, and he likes Tara, Megan, Bethan, Rhiannon. Could anyone help us either grow to love one of the others names or else find a new name we both love please, we're at a bit of an impasse at the moment! Middle name will probably be Elizabeth (family name). We live in England (although DH is Welsh) and our surname starts with an E.

Tara, Rhiannon and Bethan are all Celtic names - maybe search more Celtic names to see if you like any?
Your names are classic.
I don’t think you’re a million miles apart.
Other ‘royal’ names? Charlotte? Mary (Mairi in the Welsh?) Louise?
Other Welsh names? Ffion? Eleri? Gwyneth? Helen (often pronounced Hell-in), Delyth?

😬I don't much like any of your dh's though I can see some Welsh names in there which I guess is understandable.

What stuck out to me was that you seem agreed on Elizabeth, which has family meaning, and which is really lovely imo.

Moreover, isn't Bethan the Welsh version of Elizabeth? I don't think you can call her Bethan Elizabeth in that case, but how about Elizabeth as a first name not middle, and call her Beth for short - which is a sweet diminutive that has not been overused for quite a while. I grew up with a couple but haven't heard it on any little ones and I think it's due a comeback.

It strikes me as a good - and meaningful - compromise.

AlwaysRightISwear · 20/05/2026 22:07

What about Marianne?

Giraffehaver · 20/05/2026 22:12

I love the Welsh options. Maybe Alys which is the Welsh spelling but pronunciation is the same?
Eirlys is pretty too. I love Mabli but I'm not sure it goes with your classical taste

Thanks, that makes sense. Do you think first name Elizabeth with Bethan as a nickname would work? Then a different middle name.

How about Seren or Carys?

Thanks, I love Charlotte but already have a niece with that name so it's no use unfortunately. Mairi is pretty how is it pronounced?

I don't see why not - and it connects her to both sides of the family.

I also like Marianne.

i think Nia, Mair, Rhian or Sian all go nicely before Elizabeth. All fairly classic Welsh names.

Mumofgirls2017 · 20/05/2026 22:41

I’d pick Hazel and Tara. But other suggestions ….

maria
seren
margot
alexandra
helena
meredith

I like all of your names particularly Tara, Mary, Victoria and Elizabeth
Ideas..
Eliza Mary
Tara Elizabeth
Bridget Elizabeth
Bethan Victoria
Rosalind Elizabeth
Aster Elizabeth
Mary Bethan
Meghan Elizabeth

Wipeywipey · 21/05/2026 09:45

Blythe

NuffSaidSam · 21/05/2026 09:46

I think Elizabeth is nicer than any of the names on either of your lists. I'd go with that as a first name and give her two middle names, pick one each.

NamingNoNames · 21/05/2026 14:35

Heather - how does it sound in a local accent?
Hazel - how does it sound in local accent?
Mary - like. My Welsh relatives say it as Merry though.
Miriam - works in Welsh and English
Victoria - like
Tara - ta-ra. a bit dated and not Welsh.
Megan- Not Welsh. Don't like 'Meggun'. Meg is nice.
Bethan - dated (1960s). Don't like 'bethun'. Just Beth is better but I'm not keen.
Rhiannon - like but dislike 'ree-annun'

His choices seem dated.
Mairi is Scottish and is 'marry'
Gwenaëlle is Breton
Ffern and Ffleur are misspellings and not Welsh
Gwyneth is dated - great-granny name. Will be misspelt as Gywneth
If your DH is Welsh, I'd rule Blythe out.
Helen isn't Welsh. Is HEL-enn when used as a Welsh name
Rhian is dated (1960s) and will get said as 'Ree-un.'
Delyth is dated (1960s).

Meredith is a surname.
Nia will get said as 'near'.
Anwen is the equivalent of Anita or Annette and IMO dated (great-granny name).

Siân is fine, not much used now but was very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Siwan (SUGH-ann, sugh rhyming with Hugh and Pugh) seems more current.

Biblical names like Miriam, Sarah, Hannah, Ruth, Lydia and Esther would work.
Phonetic names like Tamsin and Tamara would work.
Martha and Lorna are pronounced differently in Welsh.

miniaturepixieonacid · 21/05/2026 14:52

I like both your lists and think they could be one list - the tastes don't seem dissimilar at all.

I love Rhiannon. Beautiful and always quite uncommon (don't know about Wales).
I also really like Miriam and Victoria.
I like all the others - no bad names there, in my opinion.

Other ideas that give me a similar vibe:
Abigail, Amy, Alys, Bryony, Bronwen, Claire, Cassandra, Carys, Cerys, Caitlin, Emma, Eleanor, Eloise, Francesca, Giselle, Honor, Ivy, Iris, Joanna, Juliet, Kathryn, Leonie, Larissa, Madeleine, Martha, Nicole, Natasha, Natalie, Niamh, Orla, Paloma, Rosanna, Rebecca, Serena, Sarah, Sophie, Tamara, Teagan, Vanessa, Verity, Zara

NamingNoNames · 21/05/2026 15:50

Beautiful and always quite uncommon (don't know about Wales).
Was common in the 1940s. Not fallen from use but not particularly popular.

You need to find a name you both love, not a compromise one, although Elizabeth known as Beth would probably be a good compromise. Shame I don't like Beth or Bethan, but I like most of the Elizabeth diminutives. Leusa is lovely. but won't work in England.

If you like Elizabeth, would you consider something like Isabel/la? (Far too popular IMO) .

If you want a Welsh name you could go for something like Hedydd or Heledd, which aren't too different from Heather and Helen in sound.
(The 'dd' is like the 'th' in Heather).
Heather in Welsh is Grug and it's quite popular as a middle name.

LittleBrownBaby · 21/05/2026 16:03

Iris Elizabeth

Loutropolis · 21/05/2026 16:06

Elizabeth but called Beth.

TISagoodday · 22/05/2026 20:23
