Should we use an accent when spelling our baby name Renee?

Thank you to everyone who helped with our previous post.
We are now going to spell it
Renee

We are now debating whether to put accent on or not now
We want it to sound Ree-nee
We know the French pronunciation is ruh-nah and we do have french blood in the family.

OP posts:

with or without accent Renee would be pronounced like Reh-nay by many people familiar with this name. ruh-nah isn't technically how Parisien French French would pronounce it either.

Yes ruh-nuh is the word runner, and is not a French version.

Daffodilsinthespring · 12/05/2026 14:52

Rene is how you want to pronounce it.

Floppyearedlab · 12/05/2026 15:53

Don't.
When she ever needs to type it on a computer she will have to look for the code to insert the accent on a keyboard rather than just type the letter.

ThatMintMember · 12/05/2026 15:54

I knew which name you meant when you wrote Renie but I wouldn't pronounce Renee in the same way.

Reenie? That seems pretty clear to me!

Rene is how you want to pronounce it.

But how do you pronounce Rene? Reen or Ruh-NAY?

But how do you pronounce Rene? Reen or Ruh-NAY?

Pronouncing it ree-nee

I would.pronounce it reen tjough

BarbaraVineFan · 12/05/2026 21:19

I think the Renee/Rene spellings would be constantly mispronounced. How about Rinie? Or Rini as another poster suggested? Reeni?

My gran was known as ree-nee

her given name was Irene

Same. When asked how I’d spell “ree-nee” I decided on Reenie.

TessSaysYes · 12/05/2026 21:25

If you have French blood you can have an accent, and always use it...but come to terms with many people/organisations not using the accent. And I wouldn't make it a battleground and for ever be telling people to add the accent. Throw that script it the bin. But the wealth of your heritage is to be celebrated. Is that the Rioja talking 🤫

CBAwithallthethings · 12/05/2026 21:35

I knew a Reenie at school. The spelling you’ve suggested I wouldn’t pronounce as Reenie, accent or not.

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 12/05/2026 21:42

I would pronounce it like in ‘Allo ‘Allo, with or without the accent

GeneralPeter · 12/05/2026 21:53

Prior poster had it right: if you want “ree-nee” you’ve got to go with an Irene, Doreen, Maureen, etc. and use it as a nickname.

Mochudubh · 12/05/2026 21:54

Makes me think of

  1. Allo, allo.
  2. Renee MacRae (Big story when I was a child but also more recently as her killer was finally brought to justice though her remains and that of her child have never been found).
  3. Irene Handl the actress. Pronounced Eye-reen-ee.

Just remembered

  1. Renee Roberts, Alf's wife in Coronation Street. Really showing my age there.
jackspratswife01 · 12/05/2026 21:59

Very allo allo

dontmalbeconme · 12/05/2026 22:00

I think if you want it prounced Ree-nee then your options are:
Reenie
Reeny
Reenee.

Personally, as others have said I'd go for a longer given name like Irene and just use "Reenie" as a nickname.

Raccoonsmacaroons · 12/05/2026 22:01

Don’t do it. You’re setting the kid up for a lifetime of this thread 😆

Notmyreality · 12/05/2026 22:04

Allo Allo

chocolateaddictions · 13/05/2026 22:40

So you want to call your baby Reenie but spell it Renée? This makes no sense

It does make sense.

You can say it either way.

IgnoreIt · 13/05/2026 23:05

You’re going to have to spell it Reenie or Reeny if that’s how you want it pronounced.

Renée or Renee will be pronounced ‘RennAY’.

converseandjeans · 13/05/2026 23:09

It just reminds me of ‘Allo ‘Allo but I suppose that’s a Gen X take on it.

NamingNoNames · 13/05/2026 23:09

You just need to say how you say/spell it, same as a lot of names. Evelyn or Maia for example.

Ottersideofthebridge · 13/05/2026 23:11

My great aunt was called Rene, it was pronounced Ree-nee, I know another elderly neighbour with the same pronunciation and spelling. I always thought it was a Northern name.
Renee, I would pronounce as ren-ay.

paddleslappingwater · 14/05/2026 00:27

If I saw the name Renée, I would ssy it as Ren- nay, with the emphasis on 'nay', you know, the French pronunciation.

I've only heard of the name Ree Nee once in my life, a very old relation of my grandmother.

If you want to pronounce it Reenee, or Reenie you should spell it that way so there's no mispronunciation.

dompedro · 14/05/2026 01:28

The pronunciation you want OP is like the shortening of the name Irene. To get that, you need to spell it Reenie. Otherwise she is going to spend her whole life correcting people!
