Scottish Gaelic girls names

Looking for inspiration! I live in the Highlands and for some reason all the usual names are no good for us due to other family members, surname clash, not liking, too popular locally and so on.

Any genuine Gaelic names considered! Not interested in "Scottish" names which are not Gaelic. We've ruled out:

Màiri
Eilidh
Ealasaid
Sìne
Sìleas
Seonag
Seonaid
Mairead
Marsaili
Ailis
Seasaidh
Ciorstaidh
Catrìona
Cairistìona
Màili
Anna
Sorcha
Rosaidh
Ceana
Raonaid
Fionnghal
Ùna
Pèigi
Iseabail

You might be better off asking in Scotsnet. Good luck.

QwestSprout · 08/05/2026 18:22

What about Aoife?

DuskOPorter · 08/05/2026 18:23

I love Sorcha is it pronounced sur aka. It is in Ireland.

Seasaidh means to stand up in Irish so not mad on that.

Raonaid is lovely but there was an abduction of a beautiful Raonaid here so that is what I think of when I heard the name.

I love Eilidh.

Have you come across Róise? It is Ro sha it’s pretty.

DuskOPorter · 08/05/2026 18:27

I take it back it is actually “seasaigí” is “all stand up”in Irish. It is a very common thing teachers say to their students for obvious reasons but Seasaidh is like more like Jessie I see - Shay See that is pretty.

SabrinaThwaite · 08/05/2026 18:28

Ceitidh?

NamingNoNames · 08/05/2026 19:21

@eiteanpiobar , the reason I suggested asking in Scotsnet was because I think you might be inundated with Celtic names that aren't Scottish.

Is this any use?:

Mhairi

NamingNoNames · 08/05/2026 19:35

My apologies, @eiteanpiobar , that list doesn't look good.

eiteanpiobar · 08/05/2026 19:49

Yes, I'm expecting lots of names that are not Gaelic (or are Irish as already proven) 😂 but I can filter them out!

Ceitidh/Ceit is lovely, but I suppose I hesitate because it's a nickname really, rather than a "full" name. It is nice though, and doesn't clash with anyone else, so I'll shortlist it!

I like Floraidh

Friends from Lewis used it as a full name for their daughter.

Mòrag could be another option?

SabrinaThwaite · 08/05/2026 21:55

(Not that I’m thinking of the Katie Morag books).

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/05/2026 22:10

love Eilidh.
otherwise Eilís

This also came to mind

eiteanpiobar · 09/05/2026 08:59

Floraidh and Mòrag are great names, thank you both! I'll put them on the list.

Anyone else any ideas? I know it's a bit niche!

My friends' daughter is Rut.

ShetlandishMum · 09/05/2026 21:06

We thought about Isla but in Scandinavian it would be mispronounced all the time. Dual citizenship.
A girl at the playground today was Una.

TartanCulshie · 09/05/2026 21:15

Your list has any name i can think of!

I went to GME and any name of friends / characters seems to be on your list - including Marsali from living and growing 😂

Have a boy instead - I love the name Coinneach.

Girl - I knew a Mara, as in the sea. Always thought that was nice.

There was a book with the main character Gràinne, pronounced as Granya, but in Ireland Gráinne in pronounced Gronya which might be annoying to deal with.

Whatisityoucantface · 09/05/2026 22:39

Beitris

I am not familiar with Scottish Gaelic names but I really like the Welsh for Beatrice which is Betrys. Google tells me this is the Scots!

I personally know a Mhairi, Ailsa, Iona and Eilidh and like all of those names but are on your list or are not Gaelic!

LimitedBrightSports · 09/05/2026 22:41

Vanora.

Debonnaire · 09/05/2026 22:46

Oighrig. Translates to Euphemia or Effie usually

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 09/05/2026 22:47

Dior-bhorgàil

Criosaidh

Debonnaire · 09/05/2026 22:50

Will you lenite when addressing? Floraidh becomes a’ Fhloraidh ( “a lorry”) - I have one of these - and Mòrag goes to a’ Mhoraig (“a voraic”I think .
