What do you think of Aria with a surname that rhymes with barley?

I like Aria considered it myself but I'm a teacher and at the moment there has been 1 or 2 in each class so just depends if that bothers you!

itsgettingweird · 04/05/2026 09:19

It’s a lovely name.

timoteigirl · 04/05/2026 09:21

Parents are fans of opera?

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 04/05/2026 09:21

Nice enough. Just make sure it’s sounds ok with your surname so abouts no names which start with the letter A if your name is Pratt or Cox.

TofuTuesday · 04/05/2026 09:22

I think it will never be pronounced correctly. I have a name which is ‘foreign’ due to ancestry and am still so stressed about saying my name or at training or teams meeting where they get to me and someone either tries or just pauses and waits for me to say how to pronounce it. I used to hate the school register so much.

butimamonstersaidthemonster · 04/05/2026 09:25

I used to love it but since game of thrones it’s become incredibly popular. For context it’s 35th in England and wales. If that matters to you?

Thefinalcountup · 04/05/2026 09:31

I love it OP. People will say it's trendy etc and it is, but it's a lovely name. It looks like it's already peaked in popularity so I don't think it will get any more popular than it already is.

Not at all, musical limits DH used to strum a guitar while a student, that's it!

I'm not keen, personally. It's a very 'now', trendy name and it also seems to have spelling and pronunciation difficulties. I've heard Ar-ee-ah, Ah-ree-ah and Ar-ya. I've seen it spelt Aria, Arya, Ariya etc.

If you are pronouncing with an ar sound at the start, rather than a short ah, it doesn't go with your surname due to the repeated ar sounds.

Aria Barley (I know you say your surname isn't actually Barley but, if it rhymes, I'm assuming it's just a different first sound and still has the ar sound?

Epicuriouss · 04/05/2026 10:03

I just think it’s a bit meh. A bit meek sounding. Plus there’s loads of them now.

Rosiemate · 04/05/2026 10:03

Sorry but it sounds silly to me because it has a meaning. It’s like calling someone Song.

Yes just a different first letter.

I just think of Aria Montgomery character from PLL. Beautiful name.. American drama 2010 (Pretty Little Liars) played by Lucy Hale.

Ineedanewsofa · 04/05/2026 10:14

There are two in DCs class, one girl, one boy. Yr6. I’d not come across it as a boy’s name previously.

Scrumbless · 04/05/2026 10:55

I mean it’s fine, but what I think is it’s just another popular girl’s name.

HugoThatway · 04/05/2026 11:45

Totally nothingy. The Italian word for air.
Are ya Harley?

bridgetreilly · 05/05/2026 02:07

I don’t think it sounds nice with a surname that rhymes with barley.

I also don’t like it because it’s a word with a meaning that has randomly become a name. To me it sounds as though the parents picked a word at random from a dictionary.

DogCollector · 05/05/2026 02:13

Is it pronounced the same as Arya from Game of Thrones?

It’s nice but depending on pronunciation, it may be a bit too similar with your surname. I like Anya which is similar.

Too trendy, will date.

sundaysurfing · 05/05/2026 12:41

Love the name but I’m a huge GOT fan - and it also rhymes with my name!

OttersOnAPlane · 05/05/2026 12:45

Not with the surname, to much of a similar vowel sound.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 05/05/2026 12:47

I like it, had no idea it was so popular though

Yes, even without thinking about the Italian meaning (which is a good point) this is my feeling - it's just some sounds. I'm not saying it's NOT a name, because lots of children are now named it, but it doesn't have a lot of weight as a name, in my mind.

I also think of opera and that makes it seem a bit silly to me, as I assume majority of parents are not naming their child due to love of opera. "Symphony" is also a pretty grouping of sounds but I'd avoid unless I wanted people to know how into those I was.

JipJup · 05/05/2026 12:53

It's a nice name but very very popular where I live.

I can almost guarantee a newborn girl will be called Aria and a newborn boy will be called Hunter.
