I'm a huge fan of colombian singer Sebastian Yatra, and this is the name of one of his hit songs. and i used to hate it for how explicitly christian it is but now I think it's really cute!

also, i'm personally not christian so would it be weird to name a future daughter this?

Christina / Cristina (Spanish version) literally means ‘follower of Christ’ or ‘anointed’ - its origin and early usage as a name were indeed explicitly Christian, but I agree with others that this association would generally not be made in the UK today.

I guess, if pressed, I would say it was a little odd for anyone to call their child a name that linguistically has incredibly strong roots into something they have absolutely no interest in.

A bit like calling your kid ‘Océane’ if you have no fondness for the sea, or ‘Mariposa’ if you don’t like butterflies.

But I do accept that I will be in the minority here. After all, there are no doubt plenty of parents who chose the name Philippa (‘lover of horses’) but don’t like horses.

I wouldn’t assume someone was Christian if called Cristina/Christina, it’s a popular name in a lot of European countries.
I think it’s a pretty name

FryingPam · 02/05/2026 11:45

I never assumed that a Christine / Christopher / Christina / Christian / Chris would be Christian, off to Google I am now to see if I’ve missed something big time and might learned something new today!

The name means 'follower of Christ'. I know eleventy million Chrises and only one of them I know from church.

I know a George who was brought up on a farm but he works for the civil service.

ThisOneLife · 02/05/2026 11:57

The name is fine, no one will associate it with Christianity but don’t spell it without the h. It’s not fair to saddle a child with a name that no one will ever spell correctly. I once knew an Emelye, whose mother blew a fuse everytime it wasn’t pronounced Emily!! The

Just because you're too culturally insular to be aware of the Hispanic spelling doesn't mean every British person is

Being aware that other languages spell a name differently and expecting a person who has no connection to that language to spell their name using it are two very different things.

Exactly this. If I know that 'Julia' is an Italian from Italy, I'd write it as Giulia but if she was 'Julia Smith from Swindon' or similar I'd write Julia.

OP is probably the one who claims to be a creative writing British Jew living in the Middle East and who loves India and Latin American music.

No they won’t. My cousin is called Christian and he’s never been asked if he’s Christian.

Muhammad is strongly associated with Islam because it’s the name of their Prophet so its very commonly used by Muslim families as a sign of respect and honour

Christian on the other handis just a name that happens to also be a word for a religion its not widely used in the same way to signal someones faith. So people aren’t as likely to assume a christian is actually christian, whereas they might make that assumption with muhammad

Are you kidding? You think Christian/christina just happens to be a word for a religion???? 🤣

Snorlaxo · 02/05/2026 15:57

I think of Cristina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy before the religion. (Not a bad association at all)

What would put me off is the spelling in the UK (Christina is much more usual) and nicknames like Chris, Chrissie and Tina.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/05/2026 16:05

With that spelling I would think of Cristina Aguilera or a Romanz language speaker

If you’re British it just sounds like illiterate parents sorry. Like Linzie or Chaley (both people I knew at various times).

This.

Delici · 02/05/2026 17:39

I would assume that you were Spanish or Italian but wouldn’t give much thought about your religious beliefs.

I like it.

I'd wonder if someone called Christian was Danish or similar before I would wonder if they were Christian in belief.

It's actually a nice and not overused name.

Christina I'm slightly less fond of as I don't love the "tina" ending, but it's still rather a nice name.

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 02/05/2026 21:35

The Cristina i know is Jewish.

Weareanimals00 · 02/05/2026 21:37

My name is in the Bible and I've never been asked if I'm Christian! I am not religious

I know women called Christine and I've never pondered their religion.

People will always think she’s a Christian, just as they would think a young man named Mohamed was a Muslim.

No they wouldn’t! Christine and Christina were hugely popular names once (they’re probably in their 70s now) and had nothing to do with signifying faith.

I think “biblical names” are slightly different to being named for Christ. Further that many names that are in the bible are obviously in Torah and the Quran.

FruAashild · 03/05/2026 20:33

Cristina is pretty (and nothing like making up a bad phonetic spelling of a standard name). Ironically I wouldn't think someone with the name was christian but I had similar qualms over the name Kirstin (which has the same meaning) so I understand where you are coming from. It's absolutely fine though.

kscarpetta · 03/05/2026 20:40

Cristina, Christine, Kristie, Christopher - none of them are associated with Christianity.

A Muslim or Jewish Christian might raise eyebrows.

Cristina name meaning is follower of Christ, same for Christina, Kristie is follower of Christ or anointed one, Christopher name meaning is bearer of Christ. So whilst you might not associate them names with Christianity that’s literally the meaning of the names.
