Elliot or Elliott?

For a boy if that makes a difference as I think it can be a unisex name, although not that common to do so.

Can I also suggest Eliot?

user2848502016 · 26/04/2026 10:15

Ps no it’s not a unisex name

Maybe not here but I believe so in the US.

I've seen this variation but the one L looks wrong to me. Thanks though!

I love this name OP (Elliott).

Agree with pp I have never considered this to be unisex, but I'm from the UK.

Not sure if you are American but if you like it that much just use it for either sex - you might have to correct people but that's no big deal?

I'm from Scotland. Also had never realised it can be a unisex name until I have started researching baby names. As I said in OP it will be for a boy. I'm just aware mums from other countries also use Mumsnet. Learn something new every day I guess!

I know it’s down to personal perception but the ‘correct’ spelling for me has always been two Ls, and only one T. Elliott looks like a surname to me. Eliot is awful and doesn’t look nice.

SkaneTos · 26/04/2026 10:41

Elliot Reid is a female character in the American tv series "Scrubs".

It's a great name! I voted for the spelling "Elliot", but both spellings are good, I think.

NamingNoNames · 26/04/2026 10:49

It's a surname and a boy's name.
On MN and in the USA all sorts of boys' names are used for girls but not the other way round. Wonder why?

I'd spell it Elliott but be prepared for it to be misspelt. Elliot seems more popular but there's not a lot in it.

GoodVibesHere · 26/04/2026 10:54

I love the name Elliot.

SliceofTosst · 26/04/2026 11:08

Love that name. I'd say Elliot over Elliott as I think double t is more like a surname.

BoleynMemories13 · 26/04/2026 14:16

Elliot is my preferred spelling. Eliot looks wrong. Elliott is how the surname is usually spelt, so I prefer the one t version as a first name.

Lovely name (for a boy)

scottishGirl · 26/04/2026 18:19

Lovely to hear positive views on the name Elliot/t! Thank you. As we've not told anyone our name choice yet, it's nice to hear good feedback 🥹

In my mind, Elliot is the version I'd use for a first name, definitely for a boy and not a girl.

Elliott and Eliot are surnames.

Edited

But she’s named that because her Dad wanted a boy.

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/04/2026 20:57

Elliot
love this name
in the end I didn’t choose it because it has very strong ET connotations (for me) but I don’t think that’s a bad thing

Numberwangggg · 26/04/2026 20:58

Whatt?

SemperIdem · 26/04/2026 21:51

I love the name Elliot.

The Elliott spelling is (or was) more usual for surnames, I think.

Lovely name @scottishGirl ☺️ It was one of my top choices for our DS but DH took it out of the running.

We’re also in Scotland and people in our area tend to drop the hard T sound at the end of names so DH insisted on nothing ending with a T 🤣

scottishGirl · 27/04/2026 08:50

Interestingly I did the same poll on a Facebook group (for mums due in July) and got the opposite result!
However, i do lean towards the one L spelling so I'm glad Mumsnet has validated that 😂🙈
