Finlay too popular?

We are considering Finlay for a boys name. Usually we prefer slightly less familiar names. Is this way too popular?

It’s a nice name, but it is fairly popular, there are a couple at our primary school and it’s in the top 20 boys names. I wouldn’t let that put you off though if you really love it.

Define 'too popular'. Everyone has their own definition, so you may as well be asking "how long is a piece of string?"

I like it, especially this spelling, but I do prefer Finn as a stand alone name. The Finley version has been quite popular for years. It's up to you whether that bothers you or not. It wouldn't bother me, if I loved a name enough and didn't currently know lots of others personally. Lots on here would say it's definitely too popular though, as everyone is different.

Lovely name, very popular if that matters to you.

Fintan?

Finlay is popular. If it has particular family meaning to you, use it.
If you just like the sound of Fin, there are other options ..

Finbar
Finnian
Fintry
Finn
Fionn
Finnegan
Fineas
Fionnan
Fingal
Flynn

I dont know any, except my best friend's dog.
Does it matter if its 'too' popular if you love it.
Persoball6 I really like it.

Never met one, nor a variation e.g. Finley or Finn. I know it’s top 20 but that doesn’t tell you how popular it is your area. Have you toured nurseries? Seen it on any pegs? Heard it in the local park? Either way it’s a nice name though and you can never guarantee not having duplicates at school or nursery- my DD has a girl with the same name in the class even though it’s outside the top 100.

Who cares? If you like it use it.

Finley popularity
Finlay (Baby name explorer)
Finn
I wouldn't say it was too popular but it wasn't popular in 1996, so will probably fall out of fashion at some point. It's a top 20 name so he'll probably be Finley Surname.

MississippiCroc · Yesterday 10:49

I really like it but yes it’s popular.

Calliopespa · Yesterday 15:47

I don't know any if that helps.

South of England.

Scorpion84 · Yesterday 15:50

It was very popular 2013
the year my son was born.

I laugh because when he plays football there is always another on the other team which is confusing when both managers shout the name out 😂

also kind of wish I had just called him Finn as that's what he gets called by everyone else

undergrown · Yesterday 15:58

It’s hard to know how popular it is in your area until you reach nursery/school and see how many there are around. In my child’s class there about 2 Finlays, a Flynn and a Finn. So very popular! And a bit confusing 😅 I don’t try to pick unique names, very happy with popular names as I think they’re popular for a reason, however when there starts being multiple variations of the name in the same class it does start to take the shine off it …

WildCountry · Yesterday 16:02

There are two in my sons class spelt that way but several classes don’t have a single one.

DefiantRabbit9 · Yesterday 16:10

I make it a point to NOT know what names are popular. Once they're out of school it really doesn't matter. If you like it go for it.

MondeoFan · Yesterday 18:57

I prefer Finn over Finlay. It was super popular 2016/2017/2018 haven’t heard as many lately

hereforthelolz · Yesterday 19:26

I only know one, and he’s 22
