Dorothy!

My friend had a little girl yesterday. She is beautiful!

Her name is Dorothy. And her middle name is one I've not heard anyone named who was born in my lifetime - Julie!

I just think it is so cute. A lovely example of older names coming back, not off the wall, just really sweet.

I don’t like Dorothy at all and Dottie is just twee.

Prefer Julia.

I think Julie is a pretty name but I know quite a few, most with the middle name Anne. All are older than me apart from one whose parents are from a French-speaking country.
Julia was very popular in my age group - it's OK, a bit boring when you know so many.

Tryagain26 · 23/04/2026 14:09

I'm not keen on Julie but I like Dorothy.

LivingTheDreamish · 23/04/2026 18:58

Dorothy is a bit old fashioned but a perfectly good name, and Dora, Dot, Dotty are all super cute.

Giraffehaver · 23/04/2026 22:58

Love Dorothy dislike Julie

Pistachiocake · 23/04/2026 23:15

I don't know how old you are, but I worked with 2 Julies in the noughties-one was 19 one early 20s, so Millennials. I don't remember most of the people thinking it was an unusual name for the age group, but it does make me think of the song Me Julie, which I would guess was early noughties. The song shouldn't be an issue for any Julies born now, though!

I think Dorothy is an ugly name in sound and also how it looks written down but I like Dorothea. Dorothy Julie doesn’t flow, I like Julie and Julia and I think Dorothy Julia would be nicer.

I was thinking earlier how much I love the name Verity.

I'm the opposite. I like Dorothy but dislike Dorothea. It's the -thea bit I don't like, it's lispy and miserable.

Love Dorothy! My GM's name though she was always known as Dolly. My schoolfriend's sister was also a Dorothy and always known as Dot which sounded very cool.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 24/04/2026 23:27

The parents sound like they've got both classic and current eastenders on the go

Brownbear8 · 26/04/2026 21:07

Dorothy is one of those strange ones where I absolutely adore the nickname - Dottie - but can’t stand the full name. Dorothy and Julie sound very old fashioned to my ears.

Dottie June, nickname DJ or Dot, however I think would be lovely.

Dorothy is a cute name for a small child but I pity that child as a teenager at school and entering the work place. Its not going to do her any favours unfortunately.

RaininSummer · 27/04/2026 17:56

I can't stand Dot or Dottie but like Dorothy or Dora.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 27/04/2026 17:58

ADORE Dorothy.

Gorgeous, classic

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 27/04/2026 17:59

Indifferent to Julie

It's the name of several of my friends' mothers. It was in the top 100 in the first half of the 20th Century.

Dorothy L Sayers, Dorothy Dandridge, Dorothy Parker ...
