Darlie and Jessup

LemonFlavour · 20/04/2026 17:59

Whilst in Florida, DH and I met another couple with children. The mom's name was Darlie and one son was called Jessup (spelling?). The husband and other children had common names.

I actually really liked those names but was thinking about how they couldn't be used in the UK because of the judgement you would receive. I know Darlie is a bit cutesy, but it's not any more cutesy than similar names that are considered acceptable and mainstream (Elsie, Rosie, Poppy). Jessup isn't too eccentric to me either. What do you think?

Jessup…. High street photo developing shop

dnadiscoveryquery · 20/04/2026 18:05

I assume it’d be spelt Jessop. Nickname Jesse? I dislike Jessop but Jesse is cute.

Darlie is ok…

GrueyTwoey · 20/04/2026 18:07

They're dreadful names

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/04/2026 18:07

Please don’t.

Yep
and Jessup isn’t a a name - it’s a made up series of letters

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 20/04/2026 18:08

Jessops is the name of the maternity hospital where I live. Or a high street photo place.

Darlie like Darlie Routier on death row?

Jessup/Jessop - your photos are ready now...

AmpleSwan · 20/04/2026 18:09

I'm afraid when I hear Jessop I kust think of the Brass Eye 'Jessop Jessop Jessop' drug dealer interaction.

TwilightAb · 20/04/2026 18:10

Jessup is a surname

MegMortimer · 20/04/2026 18:10

They sound like hamster names.

Xmasallergies · 20/04/2026 18:14

Darlie sounds like short for Darlene?
sounds like Darcy which is normal so should be fine

Jessop is the photo place how about Jess?

Yes, I was thinking that it could have been spelt Jessop or Jessep. I didn't see the name written so am not certain. It sounded like Jessup in their accent.

Were they FLDS??

Calliopespa · 20/04/2026 18:28

Honest opinion?

They sound like names for children's ponies, especially together. Giddy up!

My immediate thought too

My cat is called Dali! Because she has a moustache like him!

I had never heard of someone on death row called Darlie Routier until now and didn't think to associate the name Jessup (any spelling) with the shop.

I would be concerned that everyone would mishear Darlie as Darlene. Darlene is dreadful. Darlie is lovely.

Jessup/Jessop sounds like it would be the name of an American hillbilly or Mormon.

AuntChippy · 20/04/2026 19:24

Americans are not known for their good judgement in name choosing. Darlie and Jessup sounds like the sort of names you might hear in a trailer park. Or in a field of donkeys.

That's fine, but I did. Neither of us are wrong!

Oh please. English names can be just as ridiculous.

Alfie
Jemima
Imogen
Hugo

I actually like those names, except for Alfie, but they are English names that can’t ever leave the country because they have no appeal elsewhere.

mugglewump · 20/04/2026 20:20

I cringed at these name suggestions and are hoping you don't go down this route for your unborn children's sake. Darlie is darling and Jessop is a print shop. Darcy and Jesse are lovely on the other hand.

Sounds like a firm of solicitors in a Dickens novel

Darlie is a brand of toothpaste widely used across Asia.
It was originally called Darkie - which got changed - but they still have the black man as the logo. And loads of people still use the old name too.

Not sure I'd want that to pop up on a google search for someone's kid with the unusual name.
