Have you noticed a correlation between names and personality?

Do you think there's a correlation between names and personality (including future life choices/outcomes)? I have worked in multiple prisons and have noticed that there are names that we see more frequently than others. It's difficult to not notice when it's quite obvious. These typically aren't even names that you'd "expect". I do take it into consideration when naming my own children. Does this make me superstitious? Perhaps. Will I change my mind? Probably not.

This isn't to say that everyone with a certain name will end up in prison or that everyone with a certain name will be successful, just that there are general patterns.

I know some Haydns and Aidans who were named long before the Jayden, Kayden, Brayden trends. All of them very nice and well-behaved.

Aah but we don’t know your name. For all we know you could be a Rebecca, which would explain everything 🤣

😂

Don’t like the trend for hyphenated girls’ names, Eg Ellie-Mae

I agree with PPs that it’s mostly correlation, although I think there will be a bit more to it - maybe a name conjurs up a certain expectation and the child often lives up to it (partly because they are treated that way so just become it).

At one point the name Eleanor was the most likely name to get you into Oxford. So there is probably correlation - middle class name, parents can probably afford tutors, are well educated themselves, have been pushy enough. But the name also conjures up an image (for me at least) of that same middle class child, probably doesn’t get into much trouble, plays the cello.. If everyone around you is treating you like that you probably just become it. I actually know a (young) Ellie / Eleanor that is quite of a handful (to put it mildly) and I find it very disconcerting.

Similarly, even if not hyphenated every other baby girl seems to have Mae as a middle name. It's almost standard

All the ones I know are really nice.

https://amzn.eu/d/0hbL7Kjf I recently read this, it was brilliant and is a fictional story about how the same person’s life is affected by having 3 different names. The story of each name runs concurrently in 7 year intervals.

You need a better link. I'll be inundated with emails/ads if I look at Amazon and I can't see what the link is to.

It is. Jadon is a name from the Old Testament, Jayden is a name from around 2000.

The ones I know would have been born 2010-11. One has parents who have both been in prison and the other has parents who never come to school for anything and his uniform always has holes. The third sells vapes in the school toilets.

Do those names end in don or den? I've heard Jayden etc but never pronounced JayDON, it's always been den, however it's spelt.

Edited

I checked with dd and 2 are Jayden but one is Jaydon. Cayden is en (but definitely with a C) then Laydon is on.

NamingNoNames · 21/04/2026 13:47

The Jadon I know is older and from a Jewish heritage. The Jayden is a teenager, parents no loner together...

Jayden peaked in 2009. Baby name explorer

Absolutely yes. My husband and I always joke that people with certain names always have the same personality type! For example all the Hannah's we know are kind, gentle, timid, old soul kind of people. Martha's tend to be similar but perhaps a bit more reserved and very family oriented. We have a few other names but these are the main two we always giggle about!

It's Hannahs and Marthas. No apostrophe in plurals!

Here’s a pic if you don’t trust the link, I would highly recommend, it’s very relevant to this topic

I'll have a look, thanks. Just bit wary in case I got bombarded with dodgy ads. Smile
