Which do you prefer?

Neither. I know a Celia and a Sylvia, and they are both 80-odd

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 17/04/2026 17:51

I love Cecilia and have a friend who’s just named her baby that. Out of your choices I like Sylvia but spelt Silvia.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 17/04/2026 17:53

If that's the only choice then Celia. However personally I prefer Cicely or Cecilia, Clarisse or Clarissa.

Onefortheroad25 · 17/04/2026 17:54

Celia is nicer than Sylvia but I prefer Cecilia

HoraceCope · 17/04/2026 17:55

i like them both equally

NovemberMorn · 17/04/2026 17:56

Sylvia. I always picture a beautiful Italian woman when I hear the name.

greglet · 17/04/2026 17:59

Sylvia (Silvia also a nice spelling).

TicketyBoo11 · 17/04/2026 18:09

What about Sylvie? Sylvie is one of my favourite literary/film characters from Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. She is a beautiful, free spirited woman and it’s a beautiful name.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/04/2026 18:10

Sylvie or Cecily.

NamingNoNames · 17/04/2026 18:11

Neither but Celia is not as bad as Sylvia.
The Italian name is Silvia and it's better than Sylvia.

WaltzingWaters · 17/04/2026 18:12

I prefer Cecilia.

HoraceCope · 17/04/2026 18:14

there is a song about Sylvia
and a song about Cecelia
and poem to Celia

WearyLady · 17/04/2026 18:14

Celia without a doubt. Also Cecilia or Cecily. I don’t like Sylvia and Silvia is even worse. Sylvie, I could tolerate.

LilyLemonade · 17/04/2026 19:08

They are both pretty and retro. I prefer Celia, I think it's very elegant.

I also like Anthea in the same vein.

LoudPlumDog · 17/04/2026 19:09

Prefer Sylvie

ComeOnPhilEarlySpringPlease · 17/04/2026 19:12

Yep. Agree with the others - Sylvie or CeCe NN for Cecily. Yours are for Grandmas and although I know some older names have made a comeback, I don't think those two have yet.

AntiHop · 17/04/2026 19:15

Definitely Sylivia and definitely with a y.

I very, very nearly called dd2 Sylvia. At the last minute, I chose my second choice as I decided it was a better match with dd1.

Daffodilsinthespring · 17/04/2026 19:31

Love both. Prob Sylvia tops it

Actually Anthea is surely due a comeback with all the Theas around at present.

It has a really pretty meaning too.

OP, I like Celia better, but like Cecelia or Cecily even more.

FettleOfKish · 17/04/2026 21:10

I love Sylvia (because of an 80+ year old relative) and we may well have used it as a middle name if DS had been a girl.

gettingbyalready · 17/04/2026 22:16

Celia

PurpleNightingale · 17/04/2026 22:19

Celia with nn Cece is so cute!

Bunnyofhope · 17/04/2026 22:21

Sylvia is by far better.

user2848502016 · 17/04/2026 22:25

Sylvia
But prefer Sylvie to both

AgentPidge · 17/04/2026 22:26

Sylvia. It's to do with trees.

I worked with a British Celia at a French company. She got fed up with agreeing that her name does indeed sound like "if there is" in French. So maybe a reason to avoid it!
