Elowen/Elowyn or Daphne?

Helpmechooseanamee · 07/04/2026 14:27

I think we have narrowed it down to these two.
Other three DC all have Celtic names, so Elowen fits well. I think I prefer the pronunciation Elowyn because it comes more naturally to say.
I've always loved Daphne.

Elowyn is dreadful for a girl because the wyn is masculine and it looks like a boy's name, Elwyn. Elowen one of those names that will be mispronounced - the stress should be on the middle syllable and the two Es are both 'eh' sounds.
It will also get shortened to Ellie.

Daphne is better IMO.

Helpmechooseanamee · 07/04/2026 14:38

Elowyn is the more common spelling in the UK at the moment.

I really like the name Elowen/Elowyn ~ so pretty, and lovely for both a child and an adult

I didn't used to like the name Daphne but it's slowly growing on me . . .

Elowyn Daphne would be a lovely choice

7238SM · 07/04/2026 14:40

I'm not sure how Elowyn and Elowen are supposed to be pronounced? They could be the exact same to me.

I don't know why I really dislike Daphne. I'm not sure if its the connection to elderly woman or I just don't the sound of it- sorry.

I like Lowenna, but I realise that wasn't on your list.

So you don’t like “elderly women”. Good luck in the future then.
Daphne is a great name.

Didn't think I'd need to explain. I had a great aunt Daphne who chain smoked and her house stunk of cigarettes and cats. Also an elderly neighbour when I was a child who was awful to us. So yes, I do associate the name to these woman and its not a nice connection. Obviously, others might know a lovely person called Daphne- I personally don't.

It is but it's a Cornish name, and the -wyn is masculine. it'sa bit like Louie is more popular than Louis.

Sa11yCinnamon · 07/04/2026 15:07

Daphne would be my number one girls name but my partner vetoed it 😭

AmberSpy · 07/04/2026 15:10

Daphne was my grandmother's name and she was wonderful, I'm very fond of the name and might well use it if I ever have a DD. So that would be my vote!

The wyn ending is masculine in Welsh but I don't believe the rule applies in Cornish, and it isn't a Welsh name.
But it's true that the traditional Cornish spelling is wen.
To be honest, I'm not overly pedantic about these things. We have Irish heritage and there is such a huge variation of spellings and pronunciations of the same name especially once adopted outside of Ireland.
I love the sound Elowyn/Elowen, and I love the nature, woodland connotations. I also like the versatility, she could he Winnie or Lola as a toddler, or Ella, or keep her full name.
I love Daphne but Daph isn't great. We are very torn!

Daphne will become more popular because of Bridgerton. I don't think it will become too popular though.

@Helpmechooseanamee , There are a lot of similarities between Welsh and Cornish.
My concern with the spelling is that a spelling like Katelyn will date but Caitlin wouldn't in the same way.

If you like it, use it. I'd pick Daphne because it seems less samey than a name starting with El.

As you like the various shortened versions of Elowen/wyn but don't like the shortened version of Daphne, could you use Daphne as a middle name?

Elowyn Daphne looks so lovely IMHO

It's one I dislike too - even though generally speaking I quite like flower names.

But it is a heavy, stodgy sound. On the whole, I don't like names starting with D or a hard G.

To that extent, Elowyn is softer.

I quite like Winnie for Winifred.

It makes me think of the character in Frasier which dates it a bit (80's-90's).

Elowyn will get misspelled but it's a bit different.

Yes, Daph sounds like Staph infection or Naff to me.

Dee would be preferable.

Edited

I know what you mean about a name starting with el. Elowen seems to have different pronunciations and difficulties and I could see her just becoming another Ella or Ellie for ease which I really want to avoid.
If every time I said my name people repeated it back to me, or looked confused I think I'd just say I was called Ella.
It's tricky as I think it's becoming more popular so might not be an issue. I looked on darkgreener and Elowyn has massively increased just in one year!

I'd say it the Cornish way - El-OW-en, but I think that many would use the same pattern as Eleanor and Elodie.

What is it you like about Elowen/wyn and how would you say it? Would you stress the first syllable?

I love the combination of l's and w's. To me it sounds so melodic and fairy tale like, whimsical. I also love nature names in general.
I think I would stress it like Elodie, almost like ella-win, but slightly more elo than ela, so more of an even emphasis on all syllables.
I think that's how most people would say it? I do like both pronunciations though, and I do struggle with what feels most natural!

Eh-LOW-en
The name Elowen is pronounced as "eh-LOW-en". Some variations include "EL-owen" and "e-LOW-en," but the most common pronunciation is with the stress on the second syllable.

IPA: ᵻlˈoʊ..ɪn

That's what was returned when I searched.

Does Willow have the sound you're after?

littlepeanutbrittle76 · 07/04/2026 19:35

I really dislike Daphne. It's just something about the name.

Elowen is pretty abs will grow with her, plus there's plenty of NN for it!

Willow, Luella, Lowri?
