How common is Alex?

for children under 5?

Alexander or Alexandra...but go by Alex rather than Xander/Sasha/Sandra/Lexi etc.

I keep hearing and reading it's been done to death/very common in the UK at the moment but other than one 10 year old who lives abroad I don't know a single one under the age of 30. Not one in our local primary school for example. Friend who is a nursery worker hasn't seen one in years either.

My child had three Alexanders and one Alexandra, in a class of 29 children.

and they're under 5?

Lovely name!

I’ve got a 15-year-old at private school, and an 18-year-old at state school/college, and as far as I am aware, there has been no Alex of either sex that I have heard of in either setting.

I have an acquaintance whose daughter is called Alex: she will be early 20s.

I know of two Alexandras who are 50+.

ACynicalDad · 29/03/2026 23:52

A couple in one kids class, but none in the other

namezchangez · 29/03/2026 23:53

Very very common. Because used for both genders, probably the most common name of all for children under 8 (my experience, not under 5).

HollyGolightly4 · 30/03/2026 04:53

About 2/3 in each year group (ks4, 210 kids+). It's a lovely name for both male and female!

I think there’s one in my DC’s year at school.

Its all George, Oscar, Oliver and Samuel.

Riapia · 30/03/2026 07:51

I only know one Alex, he is very common.
😉😁.

I have a toddler Alexandria. She goes by Alex.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/03/2026 07:58

Maybe it depends on your area? I don't actually know any British kids called this right now,. The youngest British Alex I know would be about 17 by now. However, I know lots of Eastern European boys called Alex/Aleks (often short for Alexander/Aleksander, Alexandru etc).

I know one Russian girl, Aleksandra, but she's known as Sasha. I also know an English girl called Alexis, but she currently doesn't shorten it. I also know a Lexi who is just Lexi.

I know one English boy called Zander, but that's his full name.

Alex(ander) is a traditional classic. If you like it, go for it.

Alex popularity.
@lemoncurdcupcake , you can't tell because it could be very popular in your area that year.
He would be likely to be one of many called Alex in a school or workplace, but not so likely to be one of 5 in a class.

I know lots but of different ages.

Thistimearound · 30/03/2026 18:04

Well, it’s (Alexander) not a particularly rare name but as PP have mentioned it’s not a Top 20 name currently and is falling. Alexandra is much more uncommon at >200th.

I know a few under 10 - about 4 Alexanders and one Alexandra. Most boys I know from school have traditional names - Thomas, George etc - so Alexander fits in well.

I think it’s a nice name.

NorthFacingGardener · 30/03/2026 18:07

I know one under 5. I associate it with people my age really (mid 30s).

ohyesido · 30/03/2026 18:39

I have an Alex, he’s 25

My Ds13 has 7 Sebastian’s in his year group of 90 😂

Yes, Sebastian is the next Oliver/Oscar/Archie.

Slight naughty boy name that sounded original when the first one was called that but becoming ubiquitous.

Calliopespa · 31/03/2026 11:24

I know quite a few, all ages, but it has never been a "trendy" name that ties you to an era.

Alexandra is less used than Alexander I think.

NamingNoNames · 31/03/2026 11:35

Yes, Sebastian is the next Oliver/Oscar/Archie. It won't be.
naughty boy name - It became popular because of Sebastian Vettel.

Yes, it did. And "changed gear" (pun intended) at the same time...

ETA shopping malls are absolutely full of 'em.
