Me again. :-) :-) Trying to get a grasp on some Spanish names on our list…My husband is Spanish but I’m not.

Leonardo, Francisco, Thiago/Tiago

Do these names elicit different impressions? Similar? Do you much prefer one over the others?

Leonardo and Francisco I quite like.

Leo probably slightly roguish, apple of his mother's eye.

Francisco has slightly religious overtones for me, but I don't mind that. Not full-on monk but maybe studious and serious and his father's pride.

I'd probably go for Francesco rather than Francisco, both because of the Franciscan order and because now San Francisco is a city to most people.

Tiago I wouldn't even consider because of Iago, which it sounds like and it is too awful an association. What about Santiago? Or Diego? (Though then we get back to San Diego and the whole city thing again...)

I really like Tiago. What does it mean?

I really like Tiago. What does it mean?

It was a diminutive of Santiago, which translates to "Saint James" but now it's a name in its own right, too...So Tiago = James in Portuguese! It's common in Spain, nearly top 10 now.

Least favourite for me is Francisco, only that it reminds me of a Franciscan monk/friar tuck or very religious and not keen on a NN of Frank/Franc (if they even is the NN?)

I like Leonardo. Easy to pronounce and well known due to Di Caprio.

Not familiar with the last one. I imagine Thiago 'might' get pronounced TH-iago the first time till corrected. I could also imagine the other spelling as 'Here is the new car in our range, the Nissan Tiago'. In saying that, I really like it as have never heard it before.

FWIT, I'm neither British nor Spanish but have lived in 2 countries, other than the UK, and am not aware of any major faux pas with any of them.

I really like Francisco and nn Frank/Frankie.

I think that people will pronounce Thiago correctly thanks to the very famous footballer Thiago Silva.

Do you live in the UK or Spain? I’d run through the likely nicknames with your h. Nicknames are a sign of affection and while some people go by their full name, many others are shortened. eg Leonardo possibly becoming Leo in the UK where as the shortened version might be something else in Spain.

Love Thiago. How about Inigo?

AlwaysRightISwear · 28/03/2026 23:14

I like Tiago.

What about Sebastian?

I love Thiago, my friend's son is called this. Also like Leonardo but likely shortened to Leo that's very popular. Francisco just makes me think of monks.
