I met an awesome woman called Neelam recently, but had never heard the names before. If you like it, go for it!

Errorandtrial · 26/03/2026 19:09

If you love it, which you obviously do, then it's the perfect choice for your little one! It's a fine name, why not?

FrothyCothy · 26/03/2026 19:28

I work with at least two and have never heard or said the name and thought of Neil, Noel or Liam. It’s a perfectly lovely name.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 26/03/2026 19:29

Sorry. Sounds like a town to me or football club. Sorry x

mathanxiety · 26/03/2026 19:33

I love it.

If it's a name from your culture, I'd definitely use it. If not, I'd keep looking.

I worked with a British Pakistani woman called Neelam. I never once thought Neil and nobody called her Nelly. She was a very sweet woman. No idea if it's still a popular name or if it's the equivalent of calling your daughter Sheila or Patricia now but I don't think of it as a football club or furniture. I am aware that not all names used in the UK originate in the UK and not all parents on Mumsnet are white British.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/03/2026 19:36

Why? There are so many beautiful names. Choose one of those. Neelam is bizarre and, frankly, hideous.

Topseyt123 · 26/03/2026 19:43

Is it a name that is important and well known in your culture? If so and it works for you then use it if you like it.

It isn't particularly well known in the UK, and I hadn't heard of it before. That doesn't mean that it doesn't exist though, or that it is a terrible name.

Cazziebo · 26/03/2026 22:26

I know a very strong inspirational woman called Neelam. I like it.

alexdgr8 · 26/03/2026 22:30

No.
Not in this country.
Causing endless tedious comments and questions.
How do spell it?
Where is it fron?.
Is it a surname? Etc

HugeMonstera · 26/03/2026 22:31

Why have you started two threads about this name, OP?

NoWarHorse · 26/03/2026 22:36

Sapphire(blue gemstone) comes from Sanskrit nīlam, meaning dark blue or blue jewel. I like it. Be aware that if it’s not from your culture it could be mixed up with the Irish name Neelan.

DJKATIE · 26/03/2026 22:47

Sounds like a last name or a boys name, sorry it's not a nice sounding name

franklymydearscarlett · 27/03/2026 07:52

It’s an Indian name, there are much nicer Indian names IMO. I know one and she hates it and goes by Nell or Nina.

I also know a Neela which is nicer.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 27/03/2026 07:59

Perfectly normal Asian name. Very nice.
Are you Asian?

Eh? I have never in my life come across that name as an Irish name!

heavensentyou · 27/03/2026 09:31

No I dont like it, it sounds ugly. There are plenty of beautiful Indian girls names but not this one

Eh? I have never in my life come across that name as an Irish name!

Neelan is a surname but very rare in Ireland. The spellings Nealon or Neilan are a bit more widely used, though still not very commonplace. They come from Ó Nialláin, where Niallán was a diminutive of the name Niall (which is pronounced Nee-ul in Irish).

I like Neelam OP but, because I’m unfamiliar with it, I would have incorrectly guessed it to be a masculine name. I don’t know if that would be a problem though.
