To avoid initials?

Hi all,

My husband and I are dead set on our baby’s name being Freddie (Frederick for birth certificate probably). We’d also want the middle name to be after his brother (Alexander). We’d like the middle name to have meaning to us but neither of our dad’s names would suit. Only problem is, our surname begins with a T.

Adding another middle name to break up the initials would make it very long, and as I said we just don’t have any names we feel really strongly about so it would be adding for the sake of it.

Would really appreciate thoughts as we’ve been set on this name for years but the initials are making me second guess now…

FAP?

that’s ok, isn’t it?

I’d Google fap before you think it’s ok😱

I have a Freddie and he's initials are FAB he is 15 and no one so far has noticed

pambeesleyhalpert · 23/03/2026 20:24

I would use Wilfred instead

LittleRobins · 23/03/2026 20:44

I agree. I would either change the middle name or add a short second middle name. My kids both have two middle names and it’s never been a problem. Maybe something like Sam or Leo?

MerlinsButler · 23/03/2026 20:48

Did you ever read Enid Blyton’s five findouters books! This would be unbelievably cruel to a child if you are going to use the middle name. If not then it won’t matter.

I immediately thought of Frederick Algernon Trotter aka Fatty from the Enid Blyton mystery books as well.

I would go for Xander OP if you can, for the middle name.

Correcting myself it was Trotteville not Trotter! Haha

BooneyBeautiful · 23/03/2026 20:53

A former neighbour of mine named his child with the first initial of G, the middle name began with an O, and his surname began with a D. I did point this out to him, but he didn't care. Each to their own.

Matildahoney · 23/03/2026 21:37

We want to name our potential son Eric William, but our surname also begins with a W, can't do that to him so back to the drawing board! Eric is non negotiable

Mischance · 23/03/2026 21:39

Never choose a middle name that begins with a vowel!

ilovepixie · 23/03/2026 21:41

Are you Enid Blyton 😂😂

@ChocolateCinderToffee , I'm taking that you aren't known by your middle name. I am and it's a PITA.

No, I'm not, but I've known plenty of people who were and none of them have ever said it bothered them.

It didn’t hurt Gus O’Donnell in life.

Those saying use his middle name as a first name… don’t! It really is a pain. A life time of admin isn’t worth it for honouring an uncle in a roundabout way.

Talkinrubbishagain · 24/03/2026 10:02

xander ? I know two Alexander’s that are called Xander (zander)

NonstopMam · 24/03/2026 11:12

My child's initials are EAR. They are 12 and it never comes up or has been a problem. How often do you use initials in real life?
As for the poster saying switch them and be Alexander Freddie, known as Freddie. Please don't! It causes so much admin and explanation when it comes to official stuff for their whole life.

FlorenceBlack · 24/03/2026 11:43

Alexander means “defender of men” so you could choose a name with the same meaning or along the lines of protector or warrior. Then you’re still honouring Alexander but in a more subtle way.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/03/2026 11:48

Might Lysander work?

VenusClapTrap · 24/03/2026 12:16

You’ve got to be so careful with initials. I was at primary school with an Emma T; we had to have our initials embroidered on our sport t-shirts, so she had to endure years of walking around with ET on her gym kit - this was in the eighties; not long after the film came out. Poor girl never lived it down.

Starbri8 · 24/03/2026 12:24

My eldest girls initials are RED and strangely her hair turned red aged 6 it was light brown previously with a hint of red . My youngest her initials are BAD and she’s a tiny terror loves her martial arts , her sister says she’s bad ass !

ReverseReverse · 24/03/2026 12:25

I don’t think anyone would care. How often do we use our initials, almost never

LoveSandbanks · 24/03/2026 12:36

The only name I can think of to break it up is Roger.

Clearly I’m 57, going on 12!

Zennia · 24/03/2026 13:30

I definitely wouldn't want my initials to be FAT. If I were in your position, I would choose a different middle name. If it has to be an honour name, then surely there must be some other family member's name that you would consider using.

hopingforthemillion · 24/03/2026 13:35

I’m surprised at the number of responses saying no. When do middle names get discussed? Rarely!

RosesAndHellebores · 24/03/2026 14:02

Perhaps not discussed but they are on all formal correspondence, degree certificates, prof quals, passport, travel tickets, bank cards, etc.

numberblocks54321 · 24/03/2026 14:28

do not underestimate how cruel children (and a lot of adults!) can be. I was fat at primary school and I dread to think what it would have been like if my initials were FAT
