Would the name Ariadna be odd for a British Jewish baby?

Hey there!!!

Personally I love this Spanish name, especially as it’s from Greek mythology, which I love

I pronounce Ariad-NA, and I love the meaning- “most holy”

But as a Brit Jew with no Hispanic roots or ancestors but who does speak Spanish, would it be weird on a future daughter????

Thanks so much and all opinions appreciated

Why not go with the better known Ariadne?

tarheelbaby · 20/03/2026 09:25

People name their babies all sorts so if you want to name yours for a character in Greek mythology, go for it.

You're probably aware that Ariadne (to rhyme with knee) is the more common spelling and pronunciation so you and your DD might have to spend time explaining the spelling/pronunciation.

If your Jewish heritage is important, maybe choose a traditional middle name? Deborah, Ruth, Naomi, Miriam, Rebecca, Shoshana, Hannah?

Yes.

It always makes me think spider.🕷🕸

Oftenaddled · 20/03/2026 09:52

That's a lovely name. Much nicer than Ariadne in my opinion.

Why not use it?

Iocanepowder · 20/03/2026 09:58

It’s fine. I come from a liberal Jewish family.

Is there a particular pressure on you to give your child a Jewish name?

NamingNoNames · 20/03/2026 10:08

It'll sound like 'Arry Adner

IsoldeWagner · 20/03/2026 10:11

Well I teach about 20 boys called Noah and I don't think any of them are Jewish, so I think it's ok. Unless there is some religious prohibition for you of which I am unaware?

ArtAngel · 20/03/2026 10:15

I’ve got a Hebrew name and I’m not Jewish
A Jewish ex has a name connected to an ancient order of monks…

You are overthinking this

It's a lovely name and it wouldn't be weird at all. If I was introduced to an Ariadna, I'd be curious about its origins and complementary about its beauty and whether the person is Jewish or not wouldn't really play any part. I have Jewish family by marriage so I do meet new Jewish people from time to time at family events, so I can definitely envisage this scenario of being introduced to Ariadna, and in my imagination she's as lovely as her name.

That's Arachne ...

Ariadne helped Theseus kill the Minotaur. She drugged the guards at the entrance to the labyrinth, gave him a ball of wool and a sword. She was later abandoned by Theseus on Naxos and then found by Dionysos, who married her.

Ariadne is also a species of tube web spider.

It's fine. Though I prefer Arrietta, Allegra and Adrienne..

bridgetreilly · 22/03/2026 19:49

I would assume it was a misspelling of Ariadne.

I think it's a lovely name. I don't think it would be weird at all to use if you are a Jewish family. In my experience British Jews have names of diverse cultural origins so I doubt it would seem strange. It's not that different from Ariella which is a Hebrew name for example.

MrsKateColumbo · 24/03/2026 13:38

Go for it, sounds nice/fine and sounds similar to a lot of popular names

Although if you go for Ariadne I would give you a secret wink and assume you are an Agatha Christie fan!

NamingNoNames · 24/03/2026 14:44

I keep reading it as Adriana.

user2848502016 · 24/03/2026 16:09

It’s pretty but I prefer Ariadne (and I would have assumed it’s pronounced the same but with an A at the end)

catinateacup · 24/03/2026 16:11

I think it’s lovely - go for it!
