Augustus or Augustin (uh-GUS-tin) nn Gus?

(Plz don’t suggest August bc it’s just not our vibe!)

Don't love either but I'd go with Augustus over Augustin. NN Gus is nice either way.

August reminds of Princess Eugenie's son, named after his grandfather 5x removed or something like that. I don't like 'month' names or shortening so Augustus it would be for me 😁

GoldenRosebee · 17/03/2026 06:17

I don't love either but voted Augustin because it flows on my tongue better. Are you considering nn Austin? It's medieval version of Augustin.

hothouser · 17/03/2026 06:20

Neither. Both sound awful in the playground

sittingonabeach · 17/03/2026 06:32

Neither. Will Augustus or Augustin be your child’s vibe? What will their middle name be?

BoleynMemories13 · 17/03/2026 07:01

Angus? Or even Fergus? Both would give you the nn Gus but are far less fussy.

Augustus and Augustin are both such a mouthful and quite pretentious in comparison. You've also got the Augustus Gloop association. Kids can get cruel.

RhythmIsADisaster · 17/03/2026 07:01

Neither.

railcardfan · 17/03/2026 07:01

If you're trying to get to the nn Gus, there's also Angus, Magnus and Fergus all of which I prefer over Augustus or Augustin.

GoodVibesHere · 17/03/2026 07:05

God neither

MidnightPatrol · 17/03/2026 07:07

I think Augustin flows better than Augustus too

MrsW9 · 17/03/2026 09:05

Sorry if you are already aware and intending this, but in case not, the standard boys' name spelling in English is Augustine. I would assume Augustin is French and pronounced 'August-a(n)', though maybe there are also other countries which spell and pronounce it with '-in'.

Fullofpudding · 17/03/2026 09:07

Sorry. Neither!

HatStickBoots · 17/03/2026 09:13

Neither.

greglet · 17/03/2026 09:32

I like them both but voted Augustin on a whim.

Ignore the posters criticising the names - neither is that unusual and Gus is a totally familiar and unpretentious nickname!

NamingNoNames · 17/03/2026 10:36

Augustin but I'm not keen on either of them. I don't like August at all.
Austin is ok.

MaggieFS · 17/03/2026 10:37

If you want a Gus, use Angus.

Orphlids · 17/03/2026 12:50

I like both, but Augustus is my preference. It is full of character. It’s certainly not boring, as so many boys’ names have become through overuse. Please ignore any poster who tells you your choices are pretentious; they’re assuming you’re not rich or posh enough to use such names, and you should know your place. For all they know, you’re landed gentry. If you’re choosing a name that brings you joy, then what’s pretentious about that? Only pretentious if you secretly hate it.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 17/03/2026 12:52

Neither.

NamingNoNames · 17/03/2026 13:14

@Orphlids Nobody has said they are pretentious but now you have brought it to our attention, they sound like Roald Dahl or Harry Potter characters.

Orphlids · 17/03/2026 14:42

@NamingNoNames yes, the names have indeed been described as pretentious by a PP, so you’ve tagged me to tell me I’m wrong, when in fact, it is you who have made the error. What on earth was the point?

NamingNoNames · 17/03/2026 14:49

@Orphlids , one poster said 'quite pretentious in comparison'. That is not saying they're pretentious.

Calliopespa · 17/03/2026 17:58

I really like Augustus Op.

It's a great old classic name and Gus is just fine for everyday.

Augustin I'm not opposed to but the only one I have known was actually a monk and it does have that sort of cloistered, ecclesiastical feel to me, whereas Augustus could sound both statesmanlike or arty (thinking Augustus John!), and also has a more strongly masculine feel to me, whereas Augustin is so much closer to Augustine.

I think it is underused and will come back.

August is a slightly "half-hearted" version imo.

I'd go for Augustus!

TheUnknownAjax · 18/03/2026 19:50

Of your two choices I prefer Augustus, but my DS is a Gus and we chose Gustav for a full name as it's a family name and also translates better into other languages (as we're a dual nationality family). I also think it's a bit stronger and less prone to teasing as a name, plus lots of excellent namesakes (Mahler, Klimt, Flaubert, Holst).

Tbh our DS only uses his full name at the doctor's so I don't think what you choose will matter much in the end as he'll likely just go by Gus in most situations. I still love it as a name - we've never met another but it's not off the wall and everyone knows how to say and spell it 🙂

WhosMadeline · 18/03/2026 20:16

Just call him Gus

DraftLovely · 18/03/2026 20:49

Both are great. Augustin is better.

Calliopespa · 20/03/2026 07:36

Just to note op, Augustin is from Augustinus which is basically a diminutive form of Augustus, and roughly has a meaning "Little Augustus." Cute till he is about 5 maybe, but I'd personally go for Augustus!
