Just out of curiosity why so much hatred on this name? Is it because it is popular or do people think it is not a nice name?

personally I really like it and having worked in a nursery for five years I have only ever met one who went by Arch

Most names get hated on here, it's often easier to find reasons to hate a name than like it!

Archie's flack is probably based on it being cutesy, a nickname, very common (spending a long time in the top 20) and very much working class.

I don't dislike the name but there are just so many of them where I am. And those not named Archie are Alfie or Albie.

Bellybellas · 02/03/2026 07:20

It’s just an awful name imo. Sounds like someone sneezing.

The full name Archibald is also pretty bad.

Calliopespa · 02/03/2026 09:21

Some of the brattiest kids I have known are Archies.

There have been a few threads discussing "naughty" names, which obviously cannot be categorically identified, as obviously a name cannot determine personality, but, as there do seem to be gentle trends, it makes me wonder if part of it is certain names are chosen by parents who aspire to certain parenting styles. For instance Archie has strong links to PG Wodehouse and the kind of humour around being a pita getting oneself into pickles.

Calliopespa · 02/03/2026 09:22

Also Archies I have known have been rather "arch"!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/03/2026 09:25

I don't really hate many names but some just invoke a response that's a bit 'meh'. My objections - if they could even be called that - to Archie are that it's not really a name, it looks like a 'pet name' or an abbreviation that's crying out for the rest of the name to be stuck on, and that it's a wee bit cutesy. All right for a tiny baby but I struggle to picture a fifty year old Archie.

However, I know loads, so I'm sure it will just be a name as they grow up.

I don't like the sound of it and arch has more than one meaning.
I can't understand why people like it.

babasaclover · 02/03/2026 12:37

I’ve only ever come across dogs called Archie, not people

projectil · 02/03/2026 12:39

I know a family that have three boys; Alfie, Arthur and Archie.
i can’t tell you who’s who

littlemousebigcheese · 02/03/2026 12:50

Arch just sounds so hostile and harsh in my mouth. I really hate the name!

Bellybellas · 02/03/2026 14:00

Arch is too close to Arsch (arse in German)!

PevenseygirlQQ · 02/03/2026 14:04

People on MN don’t like well used names, they also don’t like unusual names, everyone must be called Persephone Cecelia or Tarquin Sebastian.

I wouldn’t worry about what people online think, nothing wrong with Archie.

NamingNoNames · 02/03/2026 14:10

@PevenseygirlQQ , I was under the impression that on MN they do like well-used names, and also like names like Persephone and Cecilia, as long as they go by a diminutive. Middle names can only be one syllable and preferably Rose or James.

FlowerFairyDaisy · 02/03/2026 14:12

It's fine. I can definitely think of worse names.

Oooh no, not Sebastian these days! Too racing driver-y!
