Elizabeth/Lisa?

I love Elizabeth as a baby girl name but it’s a common middle name in my family. I was thinking about choosing a derivative name like Lizzie or Eliza as a name for my child to be known as and using Elizabeth as the full name on the birth certificate. It would be Elizabeth Anna.
But then someone suggested Lisa. I know it’s dated but it’s really growing on me and I really like the sound of it. I’d still keep Elizabeth as a full name but have her known as Lisa. What do you think?

How about Beth, Anna Elizabeth is nice..I don't approve of Nicknames or shortening. I don't know anyone apart from Mumsnet who has a nickname that is a shorter version of their actual name..my late parents gave me a name you can't shorten. Late DM was Alice, not shortened.. DH think David, called David by me, and the family, neighbour we aren't particularly friendly with, calls him Dave.. give them a name and use it.

I find that incredibly hard to believe

Are you really saying you've never been at school with / work with / any social occasion with anyone called
Pete
Dan
Andy
Liz,
Kate
Sue
Bob
Mike
Jake
Pam
Mo
Steve

etc etc etc

I think Lisa is a very nice shortened version of Elizabeth. It gets shortened often to Lise, Elise is nice also Eliza.
Personally I'm not a fan of the sound of other "zz" diminutives of Elizabeth.

Libby is good also, there really are a lot of diminutives for Elizabeth you could go with,

I really like Lisa. Yes I suppose it is dated, but that's kind of the beauty of it.

It is also really quite a pretty dated name: lots of them just aren't.

It is a traditional nn for Elisabeth and I think Lisa sounds much nicer than Liz or Lizzie.

I think it ticks lots of the boxes of names that are making a comeback.

I'd go for Elizabeth on the BC though. You could use the Elisabeth spelling and then the diminutive flows really well.

Thank you everyone. Lots of very helpful feedback and ideas to play with.

I do know a Kate and have a cousin Pam, but they are their actual names. My ex h had a long double barrelled name,so dks were called short names like Leo and Fay,you cannot shorten them. School friends were Susan, Jennifer, Nancy, Irene, carol, lots of Susans,no none were shortened. Relatives Ian, Keith,Eric, you cannot shorten them..

Lisa is dated but at least that means she’ll be the only one in her class! If you love it then go for it!

I think it will be one to come back and you will be ahead of the curve op!

Eliza is right back in force after years of absence and, dare I say it, getting faintly over-used now, even though I like it. Liza is just one step away yet Lisa is softer and prettier. I think Liza somehow seemed to get claimed by America - maybe I'm thinking Liza Minelli? But I think Lisa still feels more international - perhaps as it is close to the European Lise, Lisette, Elise etc.

AzureRose · 06/02/2026 12:19

I dont like Lisa.

Elizabeth is a beautiful name with so much nn potential. Go with that.

Firebird83 · 06/02/2026 12:42

My Elisabeth goes by Betsy. Lisa is cute though.

They are my two favourite diminutives of Elizabeth I think.

Nice to see the s spelling of your DD! It's pretty.

I really like that spelling. But then worry she would have to spell it out to everyone. I’m leaning more towards just Lisa.

We just say “Elisabeth with an s instead of a z” and it doesn’t cause many problems 🙂

TheActualQueen · 06/02/2026 13:13

I really LOVE Eliza!
Elizabeth for the BC.
Fabulous name!! 👑

I think people are starting to get tired of all the recently revived old lady names - all the Mabels and Ethels and Elsies etc that have made a comeback - and lots don't actually have a very attractive sound.

Lisa may not stay dated all that long, as I think people are starting to move on to the 50's and 60's with names like Susie being suggested here. (And Brenda!!!)

Lisa is quite pretty and ties in with Elisabeth, which is very classic; I think it will have a big rebound actually, and op should be ahead of the curve.

ginasevern · 06/02/2026 13:41

I don't like Lisa at all. It was incredibly common (in every sense) when I was growing up. Liza (as in Minnelli) or Eliza is much nicer. I also love Elizabeth.

schnubbins · 06/02/2026 14:21

Lisa is a lovely name .

Gentlydoesit2 · 06/02/2026 14:23

Lisa is terrible. Eliza is beautiful

It is getting to be a bit of an over-used Olivia at the moment though.

RegalDiamondMonster · 06/02/2026 19:13

Really dislike Eliza. Lisa is very pretty. I'd go for just Lisa with the two middle names.

wishfulthinking25 · 06/02/2026 19:39

What about Liza?

muggart · 06/02/2026 19:46

She’ll have to deal with “why are you pretending your name is Lisa if it’s actually Elizabeth? Theyre just 2 different names!” her whole childhood.

No they aren't. No more so than Elizabeth and Betsy.

It is a diminutive of Elisabeth: that's where it comes from, just like Liz is short for Elizabeth.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 06/02/2026 19:57

I prefer the Elisabeth spelling, if Lisa is going to be the nickname of choice.

Guerlainade · 06/02/2026 20:12

I love Eliza but think Lisa is pretty too.
But I'm biased as I know a lovely Lisa who's 60 & recently met a very cute baby Lisa.
I think you'll be ahead of the curve if you choose Lisa as I can see it having a big revival in the 2030/2040s

If you are still torn between Elizabeth or Lisa how about Elise or Elisa?

muggart · 06/02/2026 20:34

Calliopespa · 06/02/2026 19:50

Historically, yes, when there was a much smaller range of names in usage, but in recent decades Lisa has become seen as a standalone name and most people won’t know the etymology of it, hence why she will likely have to field those accusations.
