How are you pronouncing Dylan? The proper way (Dullan), or the wrong way (Dillan)?

Um... Bob Dylan pronounces it Dillan, so how can that be wrong?

Firebird83 · 28/01/2026 17:31

Jack. I agree that Dylan is a naughty boy name.

HudALledrith · 28/01/2026 18:32

@Tonissister , because it's a very old Welsh name and pronounced differently.
Bob Dylan is an assumed name.

In Welsh Dullan is indeed the correct pronunciation although a lot of non Welsh people do pronounce it Dillan because they don't know the proper way to say it. Bob Dylan's name is assumed anyway.

HudALledrith · 28/01/2026 19:14

It's DULL-ann. 'dÊŒlan

Vaguelyclassical · 30/01/2026 00:22

Dylan . . . well he sold out going electric, didn't he?
I'm all right, Jack.
How about Stephen?

SemperIdem · 30/01/2026 01:05

I prefer Dylan.

Jack is so aggressively overused it has become boring.

AutumnAllTheWay · 30/01/2026 01:08

Aggressively overused 😂

HollyGolightly4 · 30/01/2026 01:14

Teacher here, every Dylan I've ever taught has been lovely! There's been a few over the years.

I've taught more Jack's, mostly lovely kids- I voted for this because I think it's just a solid name. I like the hard ending - very unusual in a world full of vowels Archie/Alfie/Theo/Leo/Ronnie/Vinnie!
It is more popular though.

HudALledrith · 30/01/2026 10:08

@HollyGolightly4 , If you are a teacher, why do you misuse apostrophes?

BeefAndHorseradishSandwich · 30/01/2026 12:48

Dylan is a bit wet. Jack is a lovely manly name which I think will stand him in good stead throughout his life.

Miaow!

I misused one apostrophe because I'm currently an insomniac and didn't carefully proof read my post 🤭

Blueskiesnotgrey · 30/01/2026 19:24

I get that Welsh pronunciation of Dylan is Dullan but a) so what, regional pronunciations are a thing b) there is also an Indian name Dillon which IS pronounced Dillan and c) things change/evolve and lots of English people use the lovely name Dylan now and choose to pronounce it Dillan and d) Bob Dylan may be an assumed name but again, so what, he's in his eighties and a lot of people have chosen to name their sons Dylan with corresponding pronunciation after a figure that has been influential for 60 plus years, get over it.

OP you can't go wrong with Jack or Dylan. Both are perfectly acceptable, solid boys names in modern Britain in 2026 and only people on Mumsnet will bang on about pronunciations, naughty, too common etc and actual gen z/alpha, whatever the next one is, Jacks and Dylans won't know, or care.

HudALledrith · 30/01/2026 19:42

@Blueskiesnotgrey ,how would you feel if it was a very common and old name in your culture and the mispronunciation became mainstream to the point of the original being lost? What if it was your husband or son's name?

Dillon is a completely different name and not Welsh. The Indian name, I believe, is Dhillon and is Punjabi.

Your post is culturally insensitive.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 30/01/2026 19:44

I wouldn't give it a moments thought tbh, language evolves. Cultural groups dont own names.

Leavesandthings · 30/01/2026 20:15

I've always really liked the name Dylan!

HudALledrith · 30/01/2026 20:37

@Blueskiesnotgrey , languages evolve and cultural groups don't own names, but I don't think that Dylan said as Dillon is nice.

"... get over it." is downright rude.

chickenbanana1 · 30/01/2026 20:52

Dylan reminds me of Modern family. 😅

Forestfire12345 · 30/01/2026 20:58

Oh no. Neither. As a teacher, not great connotations for either - especially Dylan.

HudALledrith · 30/01/2026 21:17

I think Dylan appeals to the sort of parents who give 'cool' names to their children and excuse their choice by saying 'It's the name of (celebrity)' and using that as some sort of credential of how cultured they think they are.

I know plenty of Dylans, all apart from one said the Welsh way and all middle aged. The young one is a 'Dillun' and has 'cool' parents. His sister has a 'cool' name too.

What a load of crap.

I was a primary teacher for 14 years.

Names are so diversified nowadays!

We had two Jacks and no Dylans in that time.
Both Jacks were sweet, well behaved boys...

I mean how dense do you habe to be to think that calling any child by a name will affect how their personality turns out? Its laughable.

Jack is a strong, solid name. Like Dylan too

HudALledrith · 30/01/2026 23:56

It depends where you are @AutumnAllTheWay . Here 'posh' or 'cool' names are the dreaded ones.

Another teacher with poor SPaG.

Plus, what the heck are you blathering on about?

"Round here 'posh' or 'cool' names are the dreaded ones"?!

The most nonsensical rubbish 😂 Posh and cool to who? You? Surely they are both subjective terms 🙄

And poor SPaG? Cause of one typo? Yes, that totally means I have poor spag.

You know theres a difference between measured, formal writing, and informal, hurried stuff written (while one may be breastfeeding, mid housework...)?

Take your teacher bashing elsewhere and stop derailing the thread!

I won't engage with you anymore but to reiterate op- love Jack and Dylan.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 31/01/2026 01:32

and also to reiterate, Dillon is the phonetic spelling of the English pronunciation of Dylan to distinguish from the Welsh pronunciation Dullan 🙄 neither of which are 'not nice'.

And most English girls names are French in origin, I dont see the French gnashing and wailing every time someone in England calls their daughter Louise or Emily. Its a big world out there!
