Baby girls name help

Expecting a March baby and don’t know what we’re having. Baby boy name is solid and has been from the start. Baby girl name me and DH are struggling. We have three favourites but for some reason I’m not convinced any of them are “the one”. Can I ask the Mumsnet consensus on our finalists? And any other suggestions welcome. Middle name would be either Jane, Joyce or Margaret. Surname is fairly common, begins with F and goes with most things.

Claudia
Cora
Cordelia

Cordelia is DH’s fave and rather a late entry to our shortlist. I do like it but can’t decide if it’s a bit much.

Thanks!

I like longer names so I love Claudia and Cordelia. Really love Cordelia. Cordelia Jane or Claudia Joyce are lovely.

Emanwenym · 11/01/2026 12:44

Claudia - like but 'clawed-ya' or 'cloud-ya'? (the ones I know are 'cloud-ya' but not british.) Might be too closely associated with a tv presenter. I like Claudine.
Cora - apple corer. Downton Abbey character.
Cordelia - Shakespearean. Will be shortened. My favourite of the three.

Middle names are ok, but Jane was far too popular as a middle name in my age group. I'd pick Margaret.

Sofiatheworst · 11/01/2026 12:44

I love Cordelia - could be Cora for short?
Cordelia Joyce is lovely

101Alsatians · 11/01/2026 12:46

I like Cora Jane.

JDM625 · 11/01/2026 12:54

Claudia- Agree that the pronunciation could be different in different accents but I do like it.
Cora- Not to my taste. Feels old lady with rollers in her hair. No idea why though?
Cordelia- Its ok too.

Do you like names starting with C or this is just co-incidence? Some others:
-Coral or Coralie- nn could be Cora
-Courtney
-Odette
-Ophelia

ScruffMuffin · 11/01/2026 12:56

Cordelia is my favourite.
Claudia is nice too.
Cora - I just hear apple corer, but think Coral is lovely.

Mumofgirls2017 · 11/01/2026 13:13

I like Cora. I know people who love Cordelia but it isn’t for me can’t really explain why. Maybe a bit flowery. Other suggestions

coralie
clara
cleo
cassia
cecilia

Forgottenmyphone · 11/01/2026 15:19

I think Cordelia is a bit much and prefer Cecily or Cecelia. My favourite from your list is Claudia.

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/01/2026 17:00

Cora would be my pick, because I find it prettier than the typical short versions of Claudia (Claudie) and Cordelia (Cordy).

justsayitonemoretime · 11/01/2026 17:40

Claudia has always sounded a bit heavy and inelegant to my ears ( which means nothing of course). I prefer Cordelia, as it's less common and has a nice flow to it, and even Cora is simple and easy to say and not as prone to shortening ( although someone will always find a way) but Cor is better than Claud, and Cordelia could be shortened to Delia.

AndresyFiorella · 11/01/2026 17:46

Cora is lovely. Cordelia I love for it's Anne of Green Gables and Buffy links. Kids are used to long names these days so no need to shorten Cordelia unless you want to. I taught a Cordelia and no-one batted an eyelid in amongst the Amarissas and Amelias.

mayflowers9 · 11/01/2026 17:50

I love Cora!

Claudia is lovely but can be pronounced two ways, so she would end up needing to correct people a bit. Not the end of the world!

orangetriangle · 11/01/2026 17:53

How about
Cara
Cassandra
Clementine
the last two could be shortened
or
Clara
Capillary which i love shortened to Millie

orangetriangle · 11/01/2026 17:54

How about
Cara
Cassandra
Clementine
the last two could be shortened
or
Clara
Camilla shortened to Millie

JDM625 · 11/01/2026 18:38

@orangetriangle
Capillary which i love shortened to Millie I'm glad this was a typo! 😆

IndigoBluey · 11/01/2026 18:39

I think they are all pretty. Cordelia is more unique and I guess you could have Cora as a nn

cornflakesandtea · 11/01/2026 18:57

I wanted Claudia for a girl (claw-dia) when we were expecting our twins (but we had boys!). I love it, but DH just replied “Winkleman” whenever I suggested it which annoyed me no end. It’s beautiful though, definitely my favourite out of the three you’ve mentioned.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 11/01/2026 21:43

Claudia or Cordelia.
Margaret as a middle name.
I’m not keen on Cora. No particular reason.

TomatoSandwiches · 11/01/2026 22:01

I like Cordelia and Claudia from your list.

Cosmina
Clarabelle
Chiani
Cilla
Clare
Clary
Constance
Clover
Cassie/ia
China
Cherrise
Cameron

Giraffehaver · 11/01/2026 22:21

Cordelia is both elegant and pretty. My cousin has one. She shortens it to Delly which is sweet

PurpleCyclamen · 11/01/2026 22:24

Cora
I also like Clara.

mathanxiety · 11/01/2026 22:33

I think Claudia Margaret would be lovely.
Cordelia is nice, but I prefer Cornelia as it's more Scandinavian/ Germanic.
I don't like Cora - I know it's fashionable in the Anglophone world right now (I blame Downton Abbey) but to me it's always going to be the name of three very stern and rather stout teachers I had in secondary school in Ireland in the late 70s.

Suggestions:
Caroline
Katherine
Catalina
Calista
Kathleen
Celia
Chloe
Charis
Carys
Camilla

Carla Margaret
Clare Margaret
Cicely Margaret
Clemency Jane

Pettenell · 11/01/2026 23:45

Claudia is my favourite. Fabulous name! I like Claudia Margaret or Claudia Jane. My second choice is Cordelia. I dislike Cora.

Purple2316 · 12/01/2026 05:20

Not a fan of Cora or Claudia. Cordelia is okay but not a personal choice.

I suggest Celia - means “heavenly” in Latin
