Donald or Donalbain

Again, two classic Scottish names. Donalbain is the name of a much beloved uncle we lost during Covid so is close to my heart. Donald is more common. Both I like.

I like the name Donald, had a number of relatives, now gone, called Donald. Trump will no longer be USA president in three years time and after he has left the name Donald will have other connotations. Despite what so many people say, DT is a complete softie compared to Adolf and his henchmen. So if you want to call your son Donald go ahead as I suspect Mr Trump will not be relevant by the time your son grows up.
I think if you call him Donaldbain, everyone will call him Donny, Don or Donald for short.

littleorangefox · 08/01/2026 21:13

I'm Scottish, live in Scotland and unfortunately did automatically think Trump, sorry. I wouldn't use it. I've never heard of Donalbain but if you like it then why not. Is it common where you live? Just thinking of possible issues for a child growing up in an area with an unusual name. People would get used to it though as they do with plenty of other unfamiliar names.

On the subject of Scottish names, I swithered over calling one of my boys Hamish but didn't use it in the end. I thought wee Hamish would have been quite sweet.

So all those people saying to not use Donald because of Trump would also advise not to use Andrew or Jeffrey because of Jeffery Epstein or Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor? Never use Jimmy because of Jimmy Saville? Come on, folks. Where do you draw the line? It’s a classic name that has served a lot of Scottish men over time. Nothing wrong with it. Examine your wee, prejudiced heads.

Exactly.

Donald is a great name. It's a classic.

IDontLikeMondays88 · 08/01/2026 21:26

No chip at all. Just saying it’s a very common name in Scotland in a way it may not be in England. As is Andrew. So common are these names that I would never associate with one bad apple.

The OP has also noticed there is a lot of sneering are perfectly ordinary Scottish names so it isn’t just me!

also the person who said the OP shouldn’t have asked for opinions on an English forum - I would say mumsnet is a U.K. forum

Magsbd · 08/01/2026 21:31

I’ve never heard of Donalbain and I don’t like it (sorry). I also think it’s a name which would be awkward for people to say. Donald is fine though.

HarryVanderspeigle · 08/01/2026 21:35

Murray is a great name!

The thing with Donald is that it isn't a particularly common name for younger people and is linked to someone controversial. If it was a more common name, there wouldn't be the link. There have been more really horrible people called Ian than Myra, but I bet Hindley is the one people will make the word association with. Never mind Ian Huntley, Ian Brady, Ian Watkins. Unusual names just stand out more.

HugoYorway · 08/01/2026 21:38

It's not currently popular in Scotland but it's probably a classic like Andrew.
@IDontLikeMondays88 , it's a name that does not match the current MN baby name trends so will get negative replies.

If you ask about British-origin but not 'English' names, i.e. Gaelic/Gaeilge/Welsh/Cornish-origin, you run the risk of getting mean replies.

Thunderpants88 · 08/01/2026 21:48

They are both awful. Donaldbain really does sound ridiculous

AmyDuPlantier · 08/01/2026 21:53

I’m Scottish and the only Donald I know is a guy called Donald McDonald 😁

I don’t think of Trump particularly.

Donalbain is actually beyond awful. Please don’t do that to a lovely wee baby.

It's not Donaldbain.

ah the English think they know better than actual Scots actually living in Scotland who all say Donald is fine as a name and wouldn’t necessarily be associated with Trump. It’s more likely to be associated with Duck to be perfectly honest. The usual English superiority…

I am not English, I am Irish. If I was naming a baby at the minute I wouldn’t pick Donald or Jeffrey or Andrew, although I only wouldn’t pick Andrew because I don’t like it. I wouldn’t use Ghislaine or Jimmy either, although James is fine. People do make connections whether you like it or not, it’s up to you whether you care. I named my son Jude because I liked it, even though some people go on about Jude the Obscure etc., because I don’t care about their opinions.

My first thought was Donald Trump, maybe in 10 years time but at the moment the association is too strong.

My second thought is Donald where’s your troosers.

Never heard of Donalbain but I’m guess he will be called Don most of the time? Which is OK. I do like Murray and Magnus.

Hahahahaha Donald whaurs yir troosers for defo poor boyo will
Get that sung to him alllll
the time u will
bloody hate that song which all
Scots love to sing COS WE ARE NOT CALLED DONALD!!!!!

HugoYorway · 08/01/2026 22:14

I don’t care about their opinions. I don't care about yours. Smile

Giraffehaver · 08/01/2026 22:15

I strongly advise against either in this political climate.
How about Donal?

crazeekat · 08/01/2026 22:15

Wouldn’t ever pick Donald. Then again wouldn’t pick Diddy either. I guess it’s ur call op. But honestly use it pride of middle name. U can thank us
later. Like in 20 years when u remember this was ur sons to be name and a load of Scottish mumsnetters with fuck all
else to do
in life talked u out one of the worst decisions u were about to make. He will make u find the post to thank us all personally. 🫣

So? That’s my point!

Mochudubh · 08/01/2026 22:22

Trump will be long gone before OP's son reaches secondary school, hopefully sooner. There have always been plenty little Joe's around, no-one thinks "Oh, like Stalin".

"Donald Where's Yer Troosers" had a brief resurgence about 30 years ago when some 10 year old had his 15 minutes of fame as an Andy Stewart impersonator, I doubt if many kids nowadays have even heard it.

estrogone · 08/01/2026 22:26

Must be a wind up. Donald. You can't be serious, this is a joke.

Good one. LOL 😆

OnlyOneAdda · 08/01/2026 23:01

OP, you have posted on a forum and seem to be outrageously offended by any negative opinion...either choose what you want and give no fucks what anyone thinks, or if you generally want opinions you need to take them good and bad 🤷‍♂️

I do agree with the name association point. I don't think Jeffrey or Andrew would be popular choices either (as Jimmy is usually derived from James and would rarely be on the birth certificate not sure this one applies)

I know a Myra that would have been a child just after the Moors Murders, and a Madeleine who was born soon after Madeleine McCann's disappearance, I think they are super odd and poor choices too.

Obviously not everyone will jump to the association no, but if they do, is that the desired outcome for your new child? That's what people are trying to say.

Edited

It still gets sang in my house whenever anyone’s running about in their pants/nappy/ bare bum. Ditto for my siblings kids.

Zigazagbox · 08/01/2026 23:16

I think Murray and Magnus are lovely.

I’ve Murray I’ve ever met has been an absolute gem

Yep. All those names are tainted by association.

Don’t be absurd. What are all the men named Donald supposed to do? Kill themselves because they share a name with Donald Trump? Plenty of children have been named Jeffery and Theodore (Ted or Teddy popular nicknames) even in the aftermath of the crimes committed by sickos like Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy. It hasn’t deterred people from using them. Popular names remain popular for a reason.
