Would either of these two names work in the UK for a girl obviously?

Both lovely but don’t expect people to use the accent marks. I find it just gets dropped here as it’s not part of our alphabet

FickleOcelot · 08/01/2026 10:05

I think the è and ë are likely to cause issues/be omitted

KittyEckersley · 08/01/2026 10:06

I imagine most people will pronounce them correctly but the accent won’t be written.

CurlewKate · 08/01/2026 10:22

I think the grave would be OK but not the umlaut.

Pettenell · 08/01/2026 10:47

Both lovely names, and you can persist with the accents... but it will take persistence.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 08/01/2026 10:49

Doesn't Ines normally take an acute accent, not grave?

CrostaDiPizza · 08/01/2026 11:57

Inès but be prepared for the accent to be omitted or wrong.

Raphaëlle is too frilly and will be misspelt.

It can be either, it depends on whether you want the French or Spanish version.

miniaturepixieonacid · 08/01/2026 12:04

I hink Ines would. Raphaelle would be fine and people would get used to it but I think, when written down, it would initially be confused with Raphael as that is a relatively common boy's name in the UK. I knew a Rafaela once which I think is pretty?

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 08/01/2026 12:14

How do you pronounce Inès?
Is it: In-a?

CrostaDiPizza · 08/01/2026 12:19

@ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews , Een-ess (IPA ˈines )

RaininSummer · 08/01/2026 12:23

Both beautiful but prefer Ines. Sorry I don't know how to do the accent on my phone which I guess you and she would have to used to.

Allout123 · 08/01/2026 12:28

Is Raphaelle pronounced the same as the boys version? It's much better known as a boys name here so it wouldn't be my choice. Personally I also wouldn't choose anything with an accent because we're just not set up for it/used to it here and it will just make your dd's life more hassle.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 08/01/2026 12:29

Ines

CrostaDiPizza · 08/01/2026 12:30

@RaininSummer , press the e key a bit longer than you normally would and it should show accented e variants.

@RoseApp ,Be prepared for people to get the names wrong. Innes is similar to Ines. Raphael/Rafaele to Raphaelle.
I'd also be prepared for Raffaella, Raphaella, Raphealle etc.

user2848502016 · 08/01/2026 12:35

Yes I think they work and are likely to be pronounced correctly.
I prefer Ines personally and I think most people would know Raphael as a boy’s name here but probably not Raphaelle for a girl, so you could get some confusion there.
People also will not bother with the accents because they aren’t standard letters so need special efforts to add them in - if that bothers you don’t use them

Overtheatlantic · 08/01/2026 12:38

When I was growing up in the south of the United States I had a great aunt Inez. With the local accent it was pronounced I nez, so with a long I and a hard z sound. Not very pretty sounding.

Èxcellent tip Ty. I know this so incorrêct but it's a new skill. Inès!

CrostaDiPizza · 08/01/2026 12:57

I forgot Inez!

ginasevern · 08/01/2026 13:02

Both are absolutely gorgeous names and I can't imagine many people would struggle to pronounce either of them. I had an aunt Inez and everyone commented on her pretty name. Also if I'd had a daughter she would probably have been Raffaella as I do have Italian heritage. So it's a yes from me.

We are looking at the French version in honour of my grandmother and she always spelt it Inès

Beautiful name. I know a 6yo Inès and an 18m year old Inès. Neither have lost the accent!

In-ehz (sorry I’m terrible at phonetics sort of like this but with less of a hard z) more sort of nasally

I like Ines (I would probably get the accent wrong though!)

Not keen on Raphaelle - a bit frilly and too similar to the boys name Raphael in many accents.

welcometothe10pigpigpen · 08/01/2026 21:40

My wonderful grandma was Ines but spelt Inez - love that name and wish we’d called our DD that!
