Surname is Yates.

We haven’t decided on a middle name yet.

Sound like an amalgamation of other names to me.

HoppityBun · 03/01/2026 10:06

Sounds like a new cleaning product, or perhaps a margarine, to me.

Purplewarrior · 03/01/2026 10:07

I don’t like it, sorry.

Emanwenym · 03/01/2026 10:59

@TiaKofi , It is a lot like those names. I know an Elora and Elira.
Elara is also similar to Clara, but Clara doesn't merge into the LR names because of the strong C sound.

Don't you think? To me, there are so many L sounds and El sounds around at the moment. I work in a school and they do tend to all merge into one (to my ears). Isla, Lilah, Elara, Lola, Lara, Lyra, Eliara, Elora, Ella...

Don't you find that working in a school puts you off an awful lot of names though?

Fangdango · 03/01/2026 11:03

Never heard it before, but I like it.

A very similar name which also goes well with your surname is the Welsh Eleri.

Rubyupbeat · 03/01/2026 11:29

It reminds me of the Munsters for some reason?

Elara is an nice name for you.

I also like Lara, Ellora and Laura with your surname.

I would choose a confident/crisp second name.

Elara Catherine Yates
Elara Quentin Yates
Elara Scarlett Yates
Elara Dawn Yates

Never heard it before, but I like it.

A very similar name which also goes well with your surname is the Welsh Eleri.

I also came to suggest Eleri: really pretty and fresh and lovely if you happen to have any Welsh heritage.

mathanxiety · 03/01/2026 23:13

It sounds like an inoffensive brand name to me. It could be a car or an allergy medication or an underwear brand.

I prefer Lara by a long shot. Lara Yates would be very nice.

Suggestions:
Vera
Cora
Laura
Hannah
Elena (if pronounced Elayna)

SuperGinger · 03/01/2026 23:14

Is this a windup thread after Elara was said to be the most popular girls name based on the sound following an analysis by AI.

Go for a real name:
Clara, Liora, Leonora, Lara, Eliana, Eloise, Elaine, Aria etc

mathanxiety · 03/01/2026 23:18

Some more suggestions:
Juno
Zara (the ZY initials would be cool imo).

RoamingToaster · 04/01/2026 15:52

I like it. In fact I came on this board to ask about it. I do understand the criticism that it’s similar to other names. Although it’s not made up and seems older in origin to some names suggested. It’s from Greek mythology.

We were also considering Ilaria but leaning slightly more towards Elara as it has one less syllable and I was thinking that maybe people with four syllables are more likely to be shortened.

Ilaria is Italian and is 3 syllable. ill-ARE-ya.

I’m aware it’s Italian. I thought it was pronounced ee-LAR-ee-uh. I’m not Italian so up for correction. All name sites I’ve seen seem to have it as that as well but they can get things wrong.

Fangdango · 04/01/2026 16:33

More like Illar-ya but so many English speakers will find it impossible to manage 3 syllables that you'll hear Illar-eeya a lot too. Both sound good to me.

Emanwenym · 04/01/2026 16:37

The one I know says it more like ee-LAAAR-ya. She's Italian.
In the UK, it will probably be ill-ARE-y-a.

@RoamingToaster , my initial reference was more to distinguish it from how it would be said in languages other than Italian.
One baby name site said it was Greek, in which case it would be Ill-are-EE-a.

What are you actually on about? 🤣

Elara is nowhere near the most popular girl name and it IS a real name, dating alllll the way back to Greek mythology (the princess who had a baby with Zeus).

Not sure why this would be a windup? Just because you don’t like the name?

It was an AI analysis of the sounds most likely to feature in a popular girl name. Elara was the mashup name the AI came up with.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 05/01/2026 08:26

I know one.
Its rather wet.

Marble10 · 05/01/2026 08:32

I like it! Alara was my top girl name which is similar.

I do not understand how people are comparing it to ‘Elaine’ 😂 which is a terribly dated
& awful name. All Elaine’s I know are 50+. It’s like sometime people want you to pick a horrible name. I’ve seen people recommending Pauline and Sharon before on here FFS!

TheKateColumbo · 05/01/2026 08:33

I much prefer Elora to Elara.
