Which is a prettier and nicer name please. Popularity doesn’t bother me.

That's not an easy one. Both fine names, both Shakespearean.
Which goes best with the surname?
Do you prefer Bea or Liv?
(I'm swayed by the popularity but you're not.)

Bella1905 · 26/12/2025 21:19

Thanks @Emanwenym. Neither are my favs if I’m honest but the middle ground option for both of us as my favourites were vetoed. I think Beatrice is probably prettier (and less common), but weirdly I am not sure I can imagine calling my child it in the park or whatever. I like both nicknames, and both go with our surname, although Olivia perhaps slightly more.

Obviously names are very subjective, but Beatrice is not a name I would describe as pretty at all. Olivia all the way, out of those two.

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/12/2025 22:29

I prefer Olivia if you don’t mind its popularity. Beatrice sounds a bit stuffy / formal to me, and Bea is cute but I can’t imagine using it to sign work emails. Olivia and Liv / Livi are just so lovely and easy to live with, hence their popularity.

Neveranynamesleft · 26/12/2025 22:29

Definitely Olivia

MumChp · 26/12/2025 22:33

I like Beatrice better than Olivia.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 26/12/2025 22:34

Olivia

PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul · 26/12/2025 22:36

I know a Beatrice known as Trixi or too twee?

jeezaluiza · 27/12/2025 01:44

I think Olivia is objectively a much prettier name than Beatrice, which I’ve always found a bit frumpy. I like Bea though, and prefer Beatrix if that would be an option for you?

NuffSaidSam · 27/12/2025 01:51

I don't think Beatrice is pretty. Although I do think it's a strong, no-nonsense name, which are arguably better traits to have than being 'pretty'.

Olivia is lovely and lends itself to some lovely shorter nicknames (Livi, Liv, Via, Oli). The immense popularity would put me off though.

I think on balance I'd go Beatrice nn Bea.

Emanwenym · 27/12/2025 09:43

@PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul Naff.

Quincette · 27/12/2025 09:44

I actually think Beatrice is an ugly name.

What names do you approve of?

Emanwenym · 27/12/2025 09:46

Given that you don't seem to love the names, @Bella1905 , why don't you keep looking for a name?

Are you the new mother whose husband won't let her name the baby Phoebe?

@PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul , Not Trixie short for Beatrice. Might be ok for a kitten. Tricksy.

CJones11 · 27/12/2025 09:51

I really dislike the name Olivia. It has been done to death for years. It rolls off the tongue lovely and sounds pretty, but the sheer extent to its use puts me right off. As a teacher, that and Amelia were so common you could bet there would be at least 1 in every single class. One group of Y9s had 5 Amelia's and 3 Olivia's.

Beatrice is so much more original, versatile and not as frilly which I think is great for a strong girls name.

Lilithgolightly · 28/12/2025 12:26

I would choose Olivia; I think it has a lovely sound to it, soft and flowing. Beatrice is harder sounding to me, and I don't like the diminutive "Bea".

Tighteningmybelt · 28/12/2025 12:28

I find Beatrice the opposite of a pretty name. It’s along the lines of Gertrude for me.

HoorayHattie · 28/12/2025 12:56

I really like both names ~ would find it difficult to choose between those two!

Bella1905 · 29/12/2025 18:44

Thanks all. Sorry one more to throw into the mix…Matilda (so options Olivia, Beatrice and Matilda are the only we can reach some common ground on),

I still prefer Olivia because the nn potential is nicer. I can't stand Tilly or Tilda.

CJones11 · 29/12/2025 19:33

Love love love Matilda. A little girl in my village is Matilda and her family often call her Mati which is lovely and an alternative to Tilly.

Emanwenym · 29/12/2025 19:58

Of the three, Matilda seems to be the one with more vitality to it. All three are nice though.
