What’s everyone’s opinion on Leonardo?

I know Leo is quite popular, does anybody think it’s too popular?

I have Leo (full name Leonard) it's popular but that doesn't bother me in the slightest, my DD also has a popular name. Quite like Leonardo too.

Sparklinggreen · 20/12/2025 11:26

I like leonardo but very likely he will go by Leo - which I also like. Leo is popular and will be for while I think. So if you are happy with Leo go for it! I never think name popularity should be a consideration

gogomomo2 · 20/12/2025 11:30

Do you have any Italian ancestry? If not why not just Leo? I must admit I think of helicopters when I hear the name but probably that’s just due to personal circumstances!

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 20/12/2025 12:43

I think he will get called Leo, so only use it if you really like Leo.

KnickerlessParsons · 20/12/2025 12:50

Are you Italian?
If yes, yes
If no, no

Emanwenym · 20/12/2025 13:00

Leo is very popular and has been for about 20 years.
Leonardo is a bit too much, and he might decide to be Leon or Lenny.

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/12/2025 14:51

I like Leo better than Leonardo.

Emanwenym · 20/12/2025 16:09

Why Leonardo? Do you want a longer name for the sake of it. Leo is a complete name. If you want a longer name you could use Leopold, Leonid, Leonidas or Leonard.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 23/12/2025 20:44

There are a billion Leos and Theos

I think Leonardo is fine if your surname can carry it, but he'll be known as Leo and won't stand out, so don't do it for that.

Lysander maybe?

Longdarkcloud · 23/12/2025 21:12

How about Leon either as an alternative to Leonardo or as a shortening?
Actually I quite like Leonardo — well known if little used and we accept all sorts of names without expecting the parents to justify their use on account of ethnicity somewhere in the family’s heritage.
I rolls off the tongue ina pleasing way

Elopeme · 24/12/2025 12:24

Leonardo if Italian yes, if not, I’d stick to Leo. It’s one of the more popular name that I love and I wouldn’t let it deter me, to be honest.

I also like Orlando but again probably a bit too Italian / Spanish if you aren’t…

Imagine Orlando / Leonardo Smith 😂

Elopeme · 24/12/2025 12:25

Oh I love PP suggestion of Leon. Slightly less popular.

Notmyreality · 24/12/2025 12:26

Other turtles are available.

Emanwenym · 24/12/2025 12:29

I don't like Leon. Makes me think of a pig.

OccasionalHope · 31/12/2025 22:28

Only if Italian. Otherwise Leo is fine.

OccasionalHope · 31/12/2025 22:28

Or you could have Leopold.

VenusOfTheKitchen · 31/12/2025 22:47

It’s a nice enough name but I don’t know how many months it would take my brain to stop going “Michelangelo, Donnatello make up the team with one other fellow…”

Gowlett · 31/12/2025 22:49

Leonardo is a fabulous name, I think.

Oneforallandallforone · 31/12/2025 22:50

I prefer Leo or Leon.

Unless you're Italian which obv might make more sense for you.

CharlieBoo · 01/01/2026 01:07

I love the name Leonardo and know one who is late teens now. However his parents are Italian so works perfectly with their surname. If it’s going to be Leonardo Smith, then just Leo.

Calliopespa · 01/01/2026 02:21

I quite like it, though I would go with Leo for every day.

I prefer Leonardo to all the Leopold, Leonidas (ugly) alternatives, and I don't like Leon.

The one thing I would caution against is if you are English-speaking, please don't call him Leonardo with a faux Italian accent. I know a woman married to an Italian man who did this with their dc. I realise she was trying to join in with the way her DH's family pronounced it but it was a bit cringe. 😬

ETA It was kind of Laay-oh-NAHRRrr-doh. It just didn't work.

timoteigirl · 01/01/2026 18:07

Vote for those who suggested Leon instead.

RobertaFirmino · 07/01/2026 22:01

A bit pretentious if you're not actually Italian. How about Leonard or Lionel?
