Adia which is most commonly pronounced Ah-Dee-Ah.

It has Swahili origins, meaning “gift”.

Nice enough. Reminds me of the song ‘Adia’ by Sarah McLachlan….i spent a lot of time trying to sing that when I was 14!

Alexandrine · 12/12/2025 04:44

Yep, I instantly thought of the Sarah McLachlan song too - but that might be a generational thing. However it does mean people familiar with the song will likely see the name written down and think it is pronounced as “Ay-dee-ah”.

Pretty name pronounced either way, but possibly also ripe for confusion as much more popular names like Ada and Aria also look quite similar to it (not saying to not go for it for that reason, but just something else to consider).

Iocanepowder · 12/12/2025 04:46

I also read it as Ay-dee-ah

bizkittt · 12/12/2025 04:47

Reminds me of cross stitch cloth

CrostaDiPizza · 12/12/2025 09:44

I read it as Aid-ya. Too close to Idea.

SmaugTheMagnificent · 12/12/2025 09:47

I think UK English speakers might be more likely to pronounce it ay-dee-a, based on how we say the names Adrian and Ada.
But I don't think it matters. People will only say it wrong if they see it written down before they've met her, then she'll correct them and they won't do it again.

It's a lovely sounding name pronounced your way.

NotrialNodeal · 12/12/2025 09:49

I don't like it but if you do then surely that's all that matters.

Cat1504 · 12/12/2025 10:04

It sounds like a ‘trying too hard to be different ‘ name

Tammygirl12 · 12/12/2025 10:05

My Indian neighbours have aadya. Pronounced like yours. It’s sweet

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 12/12/2025 10:06

It's not horrible, but it's not very pretty

How about Adela?

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 12/12/2025 10:08

lovely name for a sovereign wealth fund

Rollercoaster1920 · 12/12/2025 10:18

If you have Swahili background then it's a nice name. If you don't it feels a bit try-hard cultural appropriation.

My relative has a similar nice non UK name that people struggle to pronounce and spell check tries to change. It works because it's from their country / heritage and is a taking point.

I like it!

RapunzelHadExtensions · 12/12/2025 15:41

It made me immediately think of a chain of cheap eurooean supermarkets, sorry!

IdaGlossop · 12/12/2025 15:43

It makes me think of Adidas with two letters missing although I like the sound of it.

Berlinlover · 12/12/2025 15:44

I immediately thought of Aida from The Mrs Merton Show.

Turkeylurkey1 · 12/12/2025 15:47

"Ad,ya" thought of any other names?

FeelTheRush · 14/12/2025 03:11
