Currently pregnant with baby number 2 and stuck between these two girls names. Our DD has a name that goes well with either. Thanks for any opinions ☺️

Sadie

Lucy

Joolsin · 09/12/2025 19:24

Sadie. I've never met a nice Lucy!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 09/12/2025 19:25

Lucy. The name means 'light.'

user2848502016 · 09/12/2025 19:42

Lucy is much nicer, and more timeless

BunnyWilliams · 09/12/2025 20:34

I love both names and they're both on our girl list. I don't really understand all the comments where people obsess about old songs related to a name. As soon as a child takes on a name, it becomes their name, not a meaningless name from an old song. And an odd song from the 60s will definitely be meaningless in their peer group in another 20/30 years - by then it will be almost a century old!

Yes but ops come to ask what the opinions and associations of a name are for people.

We can't say what someone in the future will think - and absolutely any name will become the child's name once they have it, in which case the op might as well not ask at all if that fact alone is sufficient to redeem it.

She asked what people think. Lots of us clearly don't like it and for some, if they try to unpack the reasons for that, associations like songs can and will be a part of that. But it may not be: maybe people are thinking it's that, but in fact they just don't like it for no reason except the sound of it ( or in the case of Sadie it does look as though it has "sad" as a stem.) Who can really say why we don't like something - but it seems helpful to an op to at least try to articulate.

There is no point answering if it's only to say "depends what you like" - like one of those maddeningly vacuous waiting staff at restaurants when you ask for a recommendation , which is really what op is doing here. An answer that says "I wouldn't suggest the risotto because they use a lot of pecorino which is a cheese I dislike " is helpful to someone who might love it or dislike it.

I like Lucy; it feels like it could suit all sorts of people at various stages of life.

Don't particularly like Sadie, although it's OK, but the "cleaning lady" associations aren't on my radar at all. It mostly it makes me think of Lady Alconleigh in Pursuit of Love/Love in a Cold Climate.

BunnyWilliams · 09/12/2025 20:59

@Calliopespa Fair enough, but I'm also just sharing my own opinion as to why I like the name. You don't have to be defensive.

I think it's less a feeling of defensiveness as a impression that people are being shut down in their opinions or told that those views are sort of "disqualified from consideration."

It's also really valid - and important for op's purpose - that posters speak up if they love it, and it's great you did.

Someone else mentioned Aunt Sadie in Mitford's work on another Sadie thread, and to me that is a nice association.

Lucy is beautiful

Oreo07 · 09/12/2025 21:23

Lucy

Heyhelga · 09/12/2025 21:24

Lucy. That was always my favourite for a girls name for a girl we never had. Don't seem to hear of many Lucy's these days either. Certainly not compared to when I was at school where it was a popular name.

Jugendstiel · 09/12/2025 21:26

Lucy. Beautiful, classic name meaning Light.

Sadie looks like the word 'sad' and sounds like sadist and the only Sadie I ever knew was not particularly nice, whereas I have known some phenomenal Lucys.

Hungryhippos123 · 09/12/2025 21:28

Love Sadie! I know two little Sadie’s and they are both brilliant little girls full of character and really suit their names!

Blissful40s · 09/12/2025 21:34

Sadie. A beautiful name. Most likely only one in each school too.

Plenty of Lucy’s around and if more than one in each class, they usually get referred to Lucy M, Lucy P etc… for their entire school years.

So yes, go for Sadie!

letitallopen · 09/12/2025 21:34

My little DD is a Lucy. I don’t hear it a lot amongst children her age although it peaked in popularity in the 2000s, I think. I like Sadie as well, though.

My other contenders were Sophie. Anna and Charlotte if that helps at all.

Jowak1 · 09/12/2025 22:14

Lucy! My lovely 15 year old is called Lucy .

Forthelov · 09/12/2025 22:16

Lucy - 100 per cent.

Peternell · 09/12/2025 22:18

I much prefer Lucy. Lovely name!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 09/12/2025 23:18

Lucy of the two

I do like Sadie, but it feels more like a nn to me, and I think you need a bit of swagger to pull it off, or it feels a bit barmaid. I think it was originally short for Sarah

pinkdelight · 09/12/2025 23:26

Sadie is a great name. Love it. Lucy is fine but cuter, less cool.
