Love the name Luca but husband not keen as it doesn’t work so well in his native country. He’s is ok with offical name being Lucas but I call him Luca as a nickname. Does this work? Not quite sure given they are two established names.

I think they are both very much their own names. I know a couple of both and neither are nick named. If you are set on the name and it’s the only compromise with Dh then so be it. They are both great names btw.

You can use anything you want as a nickname. Lucas could be Luca, Lukey, Luke, Louey, Loubedoo or anything else that occurs to you in the moment.

I wouldn't assume Luca is a nickname for Lucas to be honest as they are two very well established names.

Obviously you can call him anything as a nickname but I think most people would presume his name was actually just Luca and if that doesn't work in your husband's native country I would personally look for another name.

You can call him what you want as a nickname. I don't think of them as completely different names at all!

OriginalSkang · 09/12/2025 09:43

They are one letter on the end different. Its fine

But the father can call him Lucas and the mother can call him Luca and it will work fine. You could have one parent who calls the child Henry and another who only uses Harry and that would be fine too. Harry is originally a nickname for Henry but is also widely used as a standalone now, you could still have the official name and different people use different versions.

Yes, it’s fine - possibly a little confusing if you wanted others to use Luca as they may think this is his full name - but not a major issue

Ghostsghoulsteenagers · 09/12/2025 14:39

I have a nephew with a name that is one of the variants suggested by @DappledThings - we use all of them ( or similar as nicknames - also Lucasaur ) all good in our family

Mariammaom · 09/12/2025 15:20

No, they are completely different names.

Lucas is so easy to say that it wouldn’t be shortened, especially not just removing the s.

Lucas might shorten to Luke

For those saying it can work, should I call him Luca / write Luca in casual texts etc for consistency (ie write the way I say it). Do I introduce him as Lucas but call him Luca, or just all in with Luca? His dad says Lucas the Portuguese way (Lu-cash), so regardless he will have two versions of the name used.

Well I think it works absolutely fine. Introduce him as what you want others to call him- if you want them to call him Luca introduce him as Luca.
