We have a one syllable surname. Husband loves the name Vincent. I like it and I like the Latin origins and like the fact it means ‘to conquer’ but would hate for it to be shorted to ‘Vinny’. Vince is fine. But people could call him vinny at school.

it it a ‘Chavy’ name? I mean this loosely and in a non derogatory way - apparently my name is deemed as a stripper name but definitely wasn’t in the 90s when my parents picked it. I want something sounding classy and something to suit him for all ages.

Arthur is another contender but maybe it’s too old sounding for a baby

George
James
Luke

are probably the first ones that come to mind for me, but if you love Vincent, you should go for it. Maybe it will often get shortened to Vinnie, which is fine if you're fine with that.
The name is up to the parents, so if you want a name, you should go for it. I would say pick a middle name you really like too (as opposed to just using a family name) because it provides another easy option if you're not totally sure.

If you're not keen on Vinny or Vince I might save Vincent for a middle name where it won't get shortened

Vincent is ok but think will become Vinnie which imo does seem quite gangster chav type name.

Love John/Johnathon, nickname Jonny or Jonty is lovely too.
Robert with Bobby as shortening is also nice, classic strong name but with a more modern nickname.

That’s what I thought. I’ve managed to convince my husband that although I like Vincent, the risk of being shorted to Vinnie is too great and something I don’t think I could stand, so thankfully he’s changed his mind and we’re exploring other options (I like Jonathan!)

William. It means 'strong-willed protector'. And it's a lovely, timeless name.

We have a William. I wanted names that could go at the top of cvs for any career.

“my names William, I’ll be doing your surgery tomorrow”. That works!

”and in the last 2 minutes of the match Will scores the winning goal for England! The World Cup is coming home”

🤣

I’d use Johnny over John but it’s great.

Some others I like Joseph, Peter, Jack, Alexander

HalfWayAroundTheLoop · 05/12/2025 10:02

Daniel
Oliver
Roman
Rowan

Snorlaxo · 05/12/2025 10:18

I think Patrick and Daniel are also good names.

MartinCrieffsHat · 05/12/2025 10:21

John is a good strong name. Do not use Jonathan if he's only going to be John or Johnny.

Johnathan and Jonathon are bad spellings of Jonathan.

ForLoveNotMoney · 05/12/2025 10:23

I have a Stanley. Hated anyone calling his Stan when he was little but now he’s 7 he prefers Stan. It’s a strong name with cheeky personality.

CJones11 · 05/12/2025 10:24

I used to love Arthur. It was going to be my sons name 7 years ago, and now I'm glad we didn't go for it. It's soared in popularity and where I'm from, used by a number of 'chavy' families that pronounce it as 'Arfa'.

Vincent is lovely. I also love Alexander, Stanley, Samuel, Sebastian, Elias.

shoopshoopdedoo · 05/12/2025 20:35

I would agree with your concerns about Vincent. I like the name, but dislike Vinnie, and I think the shortening may be difficult to avoid. I really dislike Arthur and also it’s the name of every other baby boy.

I love the suggestion of John! Great, classic, currently underused.

Other personal favourites would be Alexander, James, Michael, Nicholas.

I haven't read the whole thread, just here to say - John or James. You can't go wrong.

Vincent, no. Arthur, no.

John or James, yes.

Even by Mumsnet standards that’s quite some list!

Moses seemed a bit lost in there!

I'm assuming it was a jocular post but I nevertheless quite like Ignatius! Fiery!

MartinCrieffsHat · 06/12/2025 10:59

Use Vincent as the middle name.
