Any registrars out there that can confirm that by changing babies name on the BC, using space 17, we would/they would not ever need to declare 'previously known as'?
Don't want this to cause problems for baby in later life.

Unfortunately I can't answer your question, but I wanted to answer your thread, to perhaps give it more visiblity.

Have you tried asking on the Legal Matters board here on Mumsnet?

@SkaneTos , there are no other posts by the user, and the question gets asked regularly on here, possibly by the same person.

I've never asked this before 🙂

Oh, ok. The answer is you shouldn't need to declare it. You'll probably need to show the birth certificate for a security clearance check, photo id (passport/driving licence) for DBS.

MannersAreAll · 26/11/2025 23:16

You have to show all names on a DBS check, including those done by section 17.

The changes show on the long birth certificate anyway and that's what most people use for everything as basically nowhere accepts short certificates.

You have to show all names on a DBS check, including those done by section 17.
You will need to have the long form of the BC.
You won't need to specifically state that you were Pheobe Rose Smith before you were 11 months old, then Phoebe Rose Smith, or similar.

The DBS check is to make sure that you are who you say you are and whether or not you have a criminal record.

MannersAreAll · 27/11/2025 10:18

You have to include all names you've been known by, since birth, on the form.
That includes names changed by S17.

There's no special exclusion for omitting that that has ever been mentioned in any training course I've ever been on, nor is there any mention anywhere on line of it.

MannersAreAll · 27/11/2025 10:21

That said @Oodiedoodie it won't cause problems. My name was changed at 14 and it's simply a case of ticking a box and adding an extra bit in. It doesn't cause trouble.

It's only an issue when people try and pretend name changes didn't happen and don't fill forms in properly.

AntisocialMedium · 27/11/2025 10:28

@Oodiedoodie , Your child can decide for her/himself, but if your BC has been changed, you won't need to.
