What are you thoughts on these names and what would you suggest? I have no Welsh connection, just like the names. These are all potential middle names

Carys
Delyth
Dilys
Enid
Olwen

I think these would all potentially be very nice as middle names OP. Some of them are quite obviously Welsh so people may assume a Welsh connection. Personally I like an unexpected middle name. I particularly like Carys which I think is a striking and beautiful name and would happily use it as a first name.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 23/11/2025 20:38

My favourite one from your list is Carys. It also works well as a first name outside of Wales. I've met a few.

I like Elin, Nia, Seren, Mirain, Eleri, Teleri, Llinos, Celyn, Cerys, Ffion, Alys, Angharad, Mair, Cadi and Efa... but I appreciate that the pronunciation of some might get butchered outside of Wales! Eira also sounds pretty, but it seems a bit odd to think of calling your daughter 'Snow', so...

MumChp · 23/11/2025 20:38

I don't like them.

CJones11 · 23/11/2025 21:00

Carys is gorgeous. I've met many and they have always been gracious, intelligent and well humoured. Welsh names are lovely, my daughter is Gwennan (Gwenny).

Olwen and Enid could work well as middle names depending on what the first name is.

Wolfiefan · 23/11/2025 22:12

I love Carys

Dmsandfloatydress · 23/11/2025 22:22

All old lady welsh girls names to me. They belong to women in their 70s to my ears. You might want to think about more modern girls names like Seren or Nia or even Olwenna ?

spiderlight · 23/11/2025 22:22

I'm Welsh. Carys is gorgeous. I know one in her late teens. Enid might be due a comeback - the Welsh pronunciation is 'ENN-id' though, not the more common 'Ee-nid'. The others are all names of friends of my mum when I was growing up, who would be 100 now, and I can't really picture them as babies.

Mandarinaduck · 23/11/2025 22:23

Carys and Delyth are lovely, Olwen is nice enough; Dilys and Enid seem old ladyish to me but I know these older names are coming back.

Statesider · 23/11/2025 22:24

They are all beautiful names. My favourite is Carys.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 23/11/2025 22:25

I love all of them.

zazazaaarmm · 23/11/2025 22:27

Surely we've got over the 'old lady names as people have been saying this about so many names since I had my first 25 years ago!

Jellybean23 · 23/11/2025 22:30

I love Carys

Raincurrytomatoes · 23/11/2025 22:30

Carys and Dilys get my vote particularly the former as I once know a lovely girl with that name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/11/2025 22:58

Carys is beautiful

user1492757084 · 24/11/2025 03:37

Carys and Enid are my faves but all of those are sweet - particularly if they are names of family members too.

Enid was my favourite.

I know Carys has lots of fans.

DanDin · 24/11/2025 10:42

Carys and Delyth are 1950s/1960s names, were overused and definitely not gorgeous.
Olwen and Enid are very old Welsh names. As pp, Enid is ENN-id.
Dilys is vey dated.

KarriTreeSullivan · 24/11/2025 11:01

I am in Wales and asides from Carys that seems to span multiple generations where I am, they are all old fashioned old lady names, most people with these names are in their 70's now. So unless I was naming a child after an older Welsh relative I'd find it a bit odd. However if you love the names, you go for them.

sesquipedalophobia · 24/11/2025 16:23

My choice, even for a first name would be Carys.
I'm sure few would agree with me, but I also love the sound of the name Rhiannon.

DanDin · 24/11/2025 17:40

@sesquipedalophobia , the Welsh pronunciation of Rhiannon is nice, the anglicised one isn't. I like Non.
I don't understand why people like Carys. It's like Karen or Carol.

@DanDin
I actually think that both "non" and "nan" are lovely, the name flows beautifully.
My cousin is RhianNon :)

Carys is quite different, to my ear anyway, from Carol and Karen.
Both those names sound more outdated, over used, than Carys.

DanDin · 24/11/2025 18:42

@sesquipedalophobia , I know far more women called Carys than Carol or Karen. All aged about 60-70 ish.
I can't imagine a baby called any of the names in OP's list - it's like a 'Karen, Michelle, Barbara, Hilary or Joyce' list.

I didn't realise Carys was generally considered to be an elderly woman's name, not knowing any myself.
Carol and Karen however are definitely so.
I guess I just like the sound of it.
How about Alys or Seren?
Alice (Alys) seems to be on the rise, and Seren sounds more trending than Serena, which, though pretty, has been overused ime.

DanDin · 24/11/2025 19:32

@sesquipedalophobia If you like it, does it matter? Your suggestions are a bit 'Welsh names if you don't speak Welsh'.

The young parents seem to pick names that end in -i or -a for girls - names like Mali, Cadi, Mabli, Lili, Elsi, Nansi, Begw, Anni, Loti, Efa, Ela, Lea ... (Molly, Katie, Mabel, Lily, Elsie, Nancy, Peggy/Meg, Annie, Lottie, Eve, Ella, Leah...).

For a pretty Welsh middle name for a non-Welsh speaker, how about Lowri, Eleri or Catrin? (equivalents of Laura, Hilary? or Catherine)
