Amon?

I’ve already registered my baby boy as Amon, but I’ve felt very rushed in the process and now I’m overthinking spellings/meanings. Should I change his name to the traditional Eamon (my name is also Irish so it works well), or continue with Amon, which is a name in its own right, it just gets mispronounced and maybe has different connotations? Help!

i Agree with the other posters: change it to the traditional spelling as you described in your OP.

Lemonysnickety · 22/11/2025 07:16

Depends I’m Irish and I would say Amon and Eamonn differently.

Eamonn is pronounced A min.

Amon is pronounced A mon.

I know a few people who cal there child an Irish name and they mispronounce it and spend their time in Ireland telling people how it should be pronounced by them.

Lindy2 · 22/11/2025 07:50

It looks incomplete and too close to Anon.

I'd change it to the traditional spelling or it's going to bug you forever.

fivetriangulartrees · 22/11/2025 07:57

I think Amon is a cool name and I like that spelling. My reference would be the musician Amon Tobin. You must have liked the name spelt like that for a reason, OP?

Hohofortherobbers · 22/11/2025 08:03

Definitely change it, immediate thought was the holocaust

FionnulaTheCooler · 22/11/2025 08:07

Another vote for changing it to Eamonn. Amon immediately brings to mind Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List, not an association I'd want for my child.

CurlewKate · 22/11/2025 08:10

How do you want it pronounced?

Words · 22/11/2025 08:26

It's the name of a self educated 19th c poét local historian and author, Ammon ( correct sp) Wrigley.

Only other time I have ever heard it.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 22/11/2025 08:40

I confess I though immediately of Amon Goeth too.

CurlewKate · 22/11/2025 08:52

It’s OK to use a name that some people won’t be able to pronounce. Using one that has one obvious pronounciation but wanting it pronounced differently is just daft, sorry. Caveat, this obviously does not apply if we’re talking different languages/cultures. Even then it’s worth thinking about.

StewkeyBlue · 22/11/2025 08:57

Aamon / Amon is a demon god

Eamonn is better.

Needspaceforlego · 22/11/2025 09:03

Op if you want it to be pronounced
Ea-mon then change it. Because A-mon is a bit like A-men A-non save them a lifetime of mis pronounciations etc.

I’d change it OP if you want it pronounced like Eamon.
I’m Irish and don’t say Ay-min btw, it’s more
Ay-mun where I am.

Strictly speaking it should have a fada on the e, but it’s very often left out. It can be spelt with a second n too.

Firebird83 · 22/11/2025 18:41

It made me think of the Nazi too. Definitely change it to Eamon!

Sorica · 22/11/2025 19:22

Amon Goeth is my immediate horrible thought

LoveItaly · 23/11/2025 13:30

HoldingTheDoor · 21/11/2025 16:36

When I see or hear the name Amon I can’t help thinking of Amon Göth/Goeth so I’d definitely change it.

Exactly what I thought, too.

Calliopespa · 23/11/2025 17:49

GoGoGooo · 21/11/2025 16:39

Should I change his name to the traditional Eamon

Yes, I think you should, sorry. Eamonn is a beautiful name. I just don’t think your current spelling does it justice. Like others I thought of both Anon and Amos. And I did read it as Ay-mon, but I think a lot of others might not.

Yup me too.

I don't really like playing with spellings and the Irish connection was lost on me until you said Eamon. ( I was sort of thinking Am0n more like gammon.)

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 23/11/2025 17:50

Is that even a name?

Sgcloset · 23/11/2025 17:52

Mummyboy1 · 21/11/2025 16:33

To be honest, when i first looked at it I thought it was Anon. Might be my tired eyes though

Exactly what I thought! Change the spelling.

SpottyAardvark · 23/11/2025 17:55

I also immediately thought of Amon Goeth. Have you ever watched Schindler’s List, OP?

localbutterfly · 24/11/2025 02:04

I immediately thought of Goeth, too. To me, Amon and Eamon(n) - which I like - are two separate names. According to Behind The Name:

Amon: From Ἄμμων (Ammon), the Greek form of Egyptian jmn (reconstructed as Yamanu) meaning "the hidden one". In early Egyptian mythology he was a god of the air, creativity and fertility, who was particularly revered in Thebes. Later, during the Middle Kingdom, his attributes were combined with those of the god Ra and he was worshipped as the supreme solar deity Amon-Ra.

Éamonn, Eamon(n): Irish forms of Edmund. Means "rich protection", from the Old English elements ead "wealth, fortune" and mund "protection". (And the German form of these would actually also be Edmund.)

VioletMatilda · 24/11/2025 17:11

I assumed you'd gone for the Egyptian god's name.

Redflagsabounded · 25/11/2025 18:28

I'm sorry but I thought of the Nazi too. And I'd pronounce the A as in hat.
