Can we get away with Dewi?

Really stuck on boys names for DS2. DH & I like Theo (or Teddy) and Evan but are not sure and we both keep coming back to Dewi, pronounced Dow-ee (Dow, rhyming with cow!). It's a Welsh name, nickname for David. We dislike David as a name BTW.
My DH is Welsh, and I'm English but have lived in Wales and studied the language. We live in Hastings and don't plan on returning to Wales anytime soon. Our reservation with Dewi is that he'll spend his life being called Dewey and correcting people!
And the name has to fit with DS1, Jacob.
What do you think?

Thanks for all your messages. I'm a newbie here, and can't believe how many people have already replied to this thread!
I totally appreciate that Dowee is the English pronounciation of Dewi. It's my terrible linguistic skills that led me to type it's pronounciation that way. I spent long enough in Ceredigion to know it's D-eh-wi, but couldn't think how to "write" the pronounciation!
Anyway, D-eh-wi or Dowee, it's got to be better than Dewey and those bloody duck connotations!!

We did think about Dafydd (but then you'd get loads of "only gay in the village" jokes) and Dai just doesn't fit with the surname.

We might call him Dewi and then give him an easy alternative as a middle name. Then it's his choice when he's older.
Does anyone else do the CV test? You know, what does the name look like on a CV, would you give a person with that name a job?!!? Would you hire a lawyer, or trust a surgeon with that name?!? Silly I know, but I have high aspirations for him!!

Sion is a definite no-no in Hastings!!

All 3 of my DS's have names that I not only have to frequently tell people how to say (despite 2 of them being pronounced as they look ), but I also have to explain where they come from too.......

But I'd still think of the duck connotations

A big vote for Dewi here. It was always my first choice for a boy.

As it happened, we never got to use it but I love the idea of of little Dewis running around. And all the Dewis I know are simply adorable!

Ooh chequers, I wonder if we have the same name? Mine is very straightforward and you say what you see.
English people always ask "what's it short for?" Aaaaarrrrggghhhh!!!

Occasionally Chequers, but not that often. Now I think your name is different than mine. Mine is very short.

I love Dewi but sticking to my rule of using the formal name on the birth certificate would go with Dafydd and just call him Dewi in everyday life - Dewi is a familiar name, like, I dunno, Jonny for Jonathan (although am sure there are people who put Jonny on the birth certificate I wouldn't - imagine a high court judge called Jonny...). And it's a very affectionate name, St David is often known as Dewi.

My ds has a Welsh name (dh and I are both half-Welsh) but I chose the English spelling to make it easier (and it's very common as a surname) but people STILL get it wrong. If you love Dewi you might as well go for it!

LobstersLass · 09/06/2008 11:32

Chequers, I can't think of any way of giving you a clue short of telling you what it is! It only has one syllable though.

Califrau, I couldn't possibly comment!

JacobsPrincess · 14/06/2008 14:49

Well, thanks for all you comments and advice. Dewi is still on the table, but we are favouring Theo Dylan now!! We came up with a "shortlist" 7 names long, including Dewi and Nye (another Welsh nickname!) but no-one else seems to like them!!
