Sorry if this is a stupid question. I did search but didn"t find a thread. Considering Beatrice if this baby is a girl. Just wondering about the nickname Bea... I always thought it was said as "Bee" which I really like, but now I'm wondering if people pronounce it Bee-ah?

No, you're right, it's just "bee"

WoahThreeAces · 13/11/2025 20:42

Id definitely say Bee for Bea. But I think I would pronounce Beatrice like Beer-Triss. It's one of those names I've never really been sure how to say it! I knew a Beatrice at uni and I would mumble her name 😂 is it Bee-Triss, Bee-ah-triss? Bee-trees? Bee-ah-trees? I am assuming it isn't Beet Rice 😜

OttersMayHaveShifted · 13/11/2025 20:44

Almost always 'bee', but I have taught a couple of 'bee-ahs'.

Parky04 · 13/11/2025 20:45

It's Bee for me. I remember Bea Smith from Prisoner Cell Block H!

AgnesMcDoo · 13/11/2025 20:46

Bee

Pinkandpurple225533 · 13/11/2025 20:56

I know two and they’re both Bee

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/11/2025 20:57

Definitely bee xx

PurpleDiva22 · 13/11/2025 20:58

The one Bea I know pronounces her name as "Bay-ah"

Leaveittogod · 13/11/2025 20:58

We’re French and would pronounce it bee-ah. Also I have never ever seen it pronounced as bee even in the uk

RedLorryYellowLorryRedLorryYellow · 13/11/2025 21:01

Bay-ah, surely.

BigGirlBoxers · 13/11/2025 21:06

Bee, definitely. If it was Bee-ah it would sound like a Geordie buying a pint.

Needmorelego · 13/11/2025 21:08

"Bee"
That's why Bea from the Beano (Dennis the Menace's baby sister) dresses like this 🐝

We say Bay-ah in our family, but the Beatrice in question is Spanish, so that may explain it.

My first thought!

Beamur · 13/11/2025 21:12

Either is fine.
I know of at least 4 of different ages (Yorkshire) all solidly Bee.
Full name likely to be Beet-riss here too.
Bay-ah is pretty - more of. European pronunciation

Krakinou · 13/11/2025 21:22

Could equally be Bee, Bee-ah or Bay-ah. It’s one of those names where I’d always ask the bearer how they pronounce it.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 13/11/2025 21:29

I can't vote as I knew a Swedish Bea who was Bay-ah, but I consider the normal pronunciation in the UK to be Bee.

I would also enquire of the owner 😁

unsuregiraffe · 13/11/2025 21:44

Bea like pea, surely...

CucumberCool · 13/11/2025 21:55

Lots of Europeans say Bee-ah. And sometimes Bay-ah.. I think it is personal choice

Zitroneneis · 13/11/2025 22:02

I know a Bee-ah, with Bea to rhyme with Thea

petermaddog · 13/11/2025 22:04

my aunt was bee

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 13/11/2025 22:22

In Spanish it's pronounced Bay-a

VikaOlson · 13/11/2025 22:25

If English I'd assume Bee.

Very popular name and my daughter has a Bea H and Bea D in her class, both Bees.

Fridayismyfunday · 13/11/2025 22:43

I’ve known loads (I’m old!) and all have been Bees, but all English, no European.

How are you pronouncing Thea? The only one I know pronounces it Tay-ah, but I’m assuming from what you’ve written you wouldn’t say it like that.

I’d never pronounce Bea as Bay-ah unless specifically asked. I’d say the standard English pronunciation would be Bee.
