What do you think of Rodrigo

What do you think of Rodrigo? I live in the U.S and I'm white with no Spanish ancestry but I think with people like Olivia Rodrigo becoming popular maybe it won't look too odd nowadays? Also Rodrigo Abols, a Philadelphia hockey player who's not Spanish. Just curious about everyone's thoughts.

The full name is fine - I wouldn't think anything of it.
My hesitation would be how the name might get shortened. Roddy? Rod?

I think it's awful.. (Sorry!) 😬Especially if you have no Spanish connections.

hattie43 · 12/11/2025 16:14

No , not if you aren’t Spanish

Tammygirl12 · 12/11/2025 16:15

Zitroneneis · 12/11/2025 16:45

I like it. Rod is a great nickname.

Don’t like Roddie though

HugoYorway · 12/11/2025 17:13

If you like it, you might like Roderick or Rodney.

pickedupontheway · 12/11/2025 18:06

I prefer Sanchez

PastaAllaNorma · 12/11/2025 19:00

It's a no from me because Roderigo in Othello is a credulous putz and Roderigo Borgia was one of the worst, most corrupt pipes in history (and there's been some stiff competition!)

But I read too much.

NuffSaidSam · 12/11/2025 19:03

I like it.

But I don't know about using it in the US if you don't have any Spanish roots.

It's a bit like an English person calling their child Pierre. I think the general view would be you're trying a bit too hard/it's an odd choice.

Elephantangel1991 · 12/11/2025 23:03

I think it's quite hard to say properly unless your accent when speaking Spanish is good.

HugoYorway · 12/11/2025 23:18

How about Rhodri? You might have some Welsh blood.

Peternell · 13/11/2025 00:23

It would seem a bit odd to me if you don't have Spanish heritage. I've always loved Roderick, and like Rory as a nickname for it.

SnowFrogJelly · 13/11/2025 01:04

Just no

Newnamehiwhodis · 13/11/2025 01:52

It sounds Shakespearean - and not in a good way. I vote no

AlwaysRightISwear · 16/11/2025 22:40

Not without Spanish heritage. Roderick would be acceptable.

Pryceosh1987 · 17/11/2025 00:45

I think a foreign name is a good second name. I would name my child a english name as the first name, but give them a culture second name. Then end it with the mothers last name. This is me, do as you please.

KarriTreeSullivan · 17/11/2025 10:52

Love it! But I would be surprised to discover he had no Spanish connections. Although I've no idea if that's a problem in the US, I am in the UK.

chocolateychurros · 17/11/2025 10:55

If you’re not from a Spanish-speaking country, it’s quite a mouthful.

No I don't think you do read too much. These were my first thoughts too.

It also has Don Juan vibes for me - but maybe a less compelling version with a big ego : Rogering Ego?

Teajenny7 · 21/11/2025 20:16

I like it.
I thought of Rodrigo's Guitar Concierto de Aranjuez. A lovely piece of music.

I also like Roderick (Ruairidh) and Roddy as its shortened version.
