What do you think of Ariane for a girl

We are trying to think of possible name for dc2. A boy's name is not a prob but we are struggling with a girl's name. My husband (who is French) has proposed Ariane. I like it but have some reservations.

Will people in the UK think it is a made-up name (my pet-hate )? Are we condemning her to a life of having to spell her name for people. Our surname is french and no one here can spell it so she would have to spell out both names. DD1 has got a v "boring" name which works equally in french and english.

Opinions please

Arianne/Arianna is a lovely name. It means holy beauty. There's various different spellings. It is most certainly not made up. Ahem, I think ive said enough here

Ariane is gorgeous.

Kindersurprise · 08/06/2008 13:14

Very pretty name, I had a workmate called Ariane so I knew it was not made up.

Unless you call her Jane she will always have to spell her name... oh, no wait... Jayne or Jane?

lol at Kevin, our neighbours called their son Kevin. He is a cute wee soul though. Wonder what she will call DC2, she is due in October.

Think we are going to go with Ariane. Fabienne is gorgeous too but it has unfortunate associations with a Fabien who we know and think is a twat.

Our name for a boy (in case anyone is actually interested ) is Luc. Maybe I'll be kicking myself in 10 years when Kevin becomes the really cool name

Lovely name, and not made up. DH's neice is called this.

castille · 08/06/2008 20:37

What about Aurianne?

There's one in my DD's class (in France). Pretty, and not a space project in sight

frogs · 08/06/2008 20:38

Nice name. But also the name of the European space agency's rockets though.

frogs · 08/06/2008 20:38

Ah, I see someone beat me to the space project connection.

Mammina · 08/06/2008 20:44

I love it, and I really like Aurianne too

CristinaTheAstonishing · 08/06/2008 20:47

I like it but I think it works best if your DD is likely to be fair-haired. A bit like Bianca or Blanche.

snookie28 · 08/06/2008 20:47

I knew the space rocket connection but hoped that most people in this country wouldn't . Beats being called sputnik i suppose.

Like the Aurianne suggestion. Will run that past dh

I've never heard of the space rocket thing, wouldn't worry about it too much tbh - my surname also adorns various pieces of heavy machinery and no one's ever given me grief over it

snowleopard · 08/06/2008 21:18

I love it - and the space rocket thing would be a plus for us (nerds)

SlapAndTickle · 08/06/2008 21:35

I know 2 Ariane's (various spellings) both of Indian decent, both boys FWIW
