This name was mentioned on another thread and I might like it for baby due in a few weeks. We don’t have a boys name decided
What do you think of Maddox for a boy?

Personally I don't have positive associations, as the one I know is a bit of a class clown. It's very modern, which is not my personal style at all, but each to their own. If you both like it, my personal dislike of the name shouldn't put you off.

It might sound 'cool', but I would consider that it doesn't have an obvious masculine short form. Maddy or Mads are very feminine, due to Madeleine, Madison etc.

Max has a similar vibe, but is a lot more masculine. Obviously it's up to you though.

softlyfallsthesnow · 08/11/2025 11:54

Just go for Max which is probably what Maddox would get shortened to anyway.

I know a couple of lovely boys called Maddox, it’s not my usual style of name but it’s grown on me.

Orphlids · 08/11/2025 16:20

I think it sounds quite cool. I like the sound of it. I can imagine quite liking being called Maddox if I were a man. If I’m really honest, the snob in me feels a little bit sneery about it, because I’d assume the parents were trying to emulate celebrities. But I think the positives outweigh that negative. And other people’s snobbery isn’t something that should worry you.

Personally I wouldn’t choose a name with Mad as the obvious shortening….

Bobbybobbins · 08/11/2025 17:43

Not keen. Max is much better, or Felix

KilkennyCats · 08/11/2025 17:45

It’s a surname to me.

I know a boy with the name Maddox and he goes by Maddie which I love, I like the more feminine nickname. I also like girls names with a masculine sounding nickname.

Arlanymor · 08/11/2025 17:46

I prefer Madoc/Madog, which is where it comes from. Or Macsen as an alternative.

DramaAlpaca · 08/11/2025 17:47

I really don't like it; it's got an ugly sound to it, I think.

PInkyStarfish · 08/11/2025 17:49

Horrendous.

No5ChalksRoad · 08/11/2025 17:52

i’m trying to envision a 45-year-old plumber or barrister introducing himself as Maddox and it just sounds twee.

What’s wrong with Max?

DeadsoulsAngel · 08/11/2025 17:53

DS’s best friend is a Maddox (male), he’s 14 now, lovely boy. I didn’t like it at first, it’s not generally to my taste but it’s grown on me and he’s a lovely boy.

In short, if you like it, go for it, OP! Congratulations!

This is the same reason I’d never use one of my favourite girl’s names, Madeleine nn Maddie :(

Max is way more handsome.
