What do you think of double middle names in persons name?

I'm planning to use double middle name for my potential baby (TTC), but I fancy using maybe even three middle name (like first name then middle middle middle). What would you think of that? I know middle names are rarely used.
I have family to honor, but I don't fancy their names, so these names might not be family names.

DS has 2 middle names. Has zero impact on his life whatsoever. I suppose if all/any of the names were long it might be a pain filling in forms, but they happen to be all short.

DH has 2 middle names, one is also a surname. He once had a hotel booking that was randomly in the name of middle middle. That is the entire extent of the impact on his life.

3 middle names is fine for royalty. Maybe a faff for the rest of us.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 08/11/2025 12:40

I have a short forename, two long middle names, and an extremely long surname.

My middle names don't fit on forms, but I just squeeze the extra letters on the end, and it hasn't been a problem. Anyway, how often does one have to fill in official forms?

DC will have two middle names, because there are so many that I like, and one would be a nod to our adopted Welsh homeland. (I'm not sure how a Welsh first name would sound too much like cultural appropriation with a French-English surname, and some English family members can't get their tongues around the double 'Ll' or rolled R's...)

Do you mean like “Mary Lucy-Rose Sarah-May Jones?

CharlotteFlax · 08/11/2025 14:47

My kids all have three middle names. Couldn't decide on just one middle name for my first so gave her two, plus my surname as her third middle name. Then another two kids came along so I had to do the same for them!

As someone has pointed out, no one gives two hoots about middle names in normal life so I say give as many as you like!

Catpiece · 08/11/2025 15:04

My oldest son has two middle names. He doesn’t really ever use the second one

LivingTheDreamish · 09/11/2025 00:54

The royals do it. One or two is enough for us normal folk surely?

Polly199068 · 09/11/2025 00:55

No one will use them.

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 09/11/2025 01:14

I don’t think having two middle names is unusual so wouldn’t think anything of it but my uncle has 3 middle names and it has caused a few admin issues over the years so I wouldn’t recommend 3 or more for that reason.

MrsStig · 09/11/2025 07:22

I had a childhood friend with three middle names and would introduce herself with all five names! Personally I think three is two many. One of my DC has two. DH wasn’t keen on the middle name I wanted, and we somehow added in a third when we went to register her. It’s quite “out there” and has no family connection. We didn’t usually do crazy shit like that, but I think DH secretly wishes he had a middle name.

VarioPerfect · 09/11/2025 07:29

We all have 2 n my family so my kids do as well. DH has 1 but was happy for the kids to have another. Surely it’s length of names that matter for form filling, not number of names? More of a pain to write Evangeline Ermentrude Featherstonehaugh than Eve Mary Anne Jones?

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/11/2025 07:30

Mine all have two middle names, named after family.

lurvy · 09/11/2025 07:34

Two of mine have two middle names. I wouldn't do it if I could turn back the clock. One is okay as they have short middle names. The other is always a letter too long when it comes to filling in forms. It's really inconvenient for them. Three would be a nightmare.

Cheepcheepcheep · 09/11/2025 07:39

We all have 2 middle names in our family:

Me: <family name> + <random filler name>
DH: <his dad’s name> + <his granddads name>
DD: <family name same as mine> + <my grandmothers name>
DS: <his granddads name same as DH’s first middle name> + <my maiden name>

They all have reasons except my silly filler one and cause us no drama! I like that my first middle is the same as DD’s and same for DH and DS. But I’m a freak for symmetry 😂

No issues with forms or whatever, the longest full name between the four of us has 27 characters (not including spaces). Maybe there’s a ‘standard’ character limit where it becomes tricky?

One of mine has 25 letters (not counting the two spaces or last name) and has endless trouble with forms.

Oh really? That’s so interesting! I’m trying to think what I’ve completed for the DC with 27. Passport - no issues. Booking holidays has been fine. School registration, child benefit, tax free childcare all good. Trying to think if there’s been anything else!

University forms, marriage documents, mortgage documents, other government forms. It's really kicked in later years. I've apologised for it. She often has to go in person because she can't fill in online forms because her name doesn't fit.

Less official forms she just drops one of the middle names when legal name doesn't matter.

I’ve got 25 in mine (28 when you include the spaces) and am 38 years old and have never had an issue fitting my full name in a form in my life.

ETA - this includes passport (x 2 countries), wedding cert, uni forms (3 x institutions), mortgage, bank accounts etc etc. I have never once had to go anywhere to fill anything in in person…

Astrabees · 09/11/2025 12:34

DS2 has two middle names. His first name is the name that suited him best, is not a really popular name and I have never met anyone with it who is not really lovely. First middle name is the name he would have had if it had not been so popular with our friends and relations naming their children. Second middle name was one from the family tree that had not been used since 1816 that we rather liked. He also has both our surnames, no hyphen.

ViviousCurrentBun · 09/11/2025 12:45

I have an English first and second name and then my Chinese name. I have the generational part of a Chinese name so it looks like two names to the unknowing.

The Chinese one is not a middle name but my British birth certificate obviously makes it look like that I have 3 middle names, people almost always comment. I didn’t change my family name on marriage but sometimes we are called Mr and Mrs DH family name, DH has a really ancient Anglo Saxon name that is dying out. DH has 2 middle names and for some reason was fascinated with the long length of my name when we first got together.

It is very rare for English people to be able to pronounce either of our family names.

Clearinguptheclutter · 09/11/2025 12:50

my dcs have two middle names but that’s just because dh and I couldn’t agree on just one so it’s one from each of us in both cases

however other than in BC and passport we never ever use them nor do the DCs. I think they’re a bit pointless tbh other than perhaps giving dc an alternative name in the future if they like

SwirlyShirly · 09/11/2025 16:34

both of my boys have 2 middle names. We just really liked all the names both times around so went with all of them. Neither of them are fussed about having 2 middle names.

crocodilesandwich · 09/11/2025 16:51

As someone with 2 middle names, it can be a pain if there’s only so much room on electronic forms- my driving licence doesn’t fit my full name which is super annoying when you need to match it when applying for finance etc

hardtocare · 09/11/2025 16:58

My eldest has three middle names as we each wanted our mother’s names in there and he felt odd about excluding his stepmum, who had actually raised him. Youngest has two and that works. Three is too many really

Your British forms must be more accommodating than some overseas ones.

I guess, although one of my passports is (obviously) not British, and I also attended uni and have bank accounts etc in a third country and no issues there either.

Sounds like your DD has been unlucky but probably not really relevant to OP.
